Comments for iTunes Bar

I love this widget and have used it successfully for many months. However, this morning I finally got around to up updating my iTunes to the current version (7.4.3.1) on Windows, and I have the same problem as reported by prep.chuck. The widget loads fine, but the artist/song/album scroll window stays blank. The controls work, but they turn red when pressed.
I downloaded the older debug version and ran it. The error reported is: "uncaught exception: Error accessing 'current track': Library not registered"
Daniel, will you have an update to fix this issue soon? With 131,000+ downloads, I'm not the only one that loves your iTunes bar!! ;-)
Many thanks!!!!

Best iTunes widget I've been able to find. It's always worked flawlessly until about 2 iTunes updates ago, now none of the info is displayed. No artist, title, time elapsed, artwork, rating, NOTHING! Haven't had the "Could not open Widget" error, but it's just as bad. Only thing that still works is the hotkeys. Hope for a fix?????

Just Unistall Yahoo Widgets Completely. Re-install Yahoo Widgets...and it should work.
**Dont forget to copy the widgets on your computer to restore them**..(So you don't get all the annoying old widgets you never used back again)
Thats what I did for the Reload Problem.

I love this widget. Only one thing I think it could use: a reload widget option, just in case it gets stuck loading the widget before itunes opens, like it did for me today. Otherwise, fantastic widget.

Yea, I am getting the same problem as below:
"Could not open Widget C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\My Documents\My Widgets\iTunes Bar.widget.

stopped working after I ran spybot and adaware...???
Hope for a fix soon??

It used to work great but after I downloaded the latest update, everytime I try to open it, it says...
"Could not open Widget C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\My Documents\My Widgets\iTunes Bar.widget.

Can you please tell me what is happening? Thanks.

Ok -- a fix for the resize issue has been submitted -- expect to see it here in the next few days (if you can't wait, email me and I can send it to you directly).
hk_kumardbs: that's a good idea -- I'll look into it for version 5.
George the Flea: I always name the widget "iTunes Bar.widget". Perhaps Yahoo! normalizes the file name when I submit it -- if that's the case, I suppose from now on it will always be iTunes_bar.widget until they decide to change it :(

My apologies about the resize issue. Somehow I managed to completely overlook that problem in the rush to release 4.0.1 for compatibility with YWE 4.0. I'm working on a fix and will update the widget shortly.
Also, version 4.0.1 of the widget requires the new 4.0 release of Yahoo Widget Engine -- that is probably why you're having problems, Joshua W. Unfortunately some of the changes to the widget engine are not backwards compatible so you don't get the proper error message on startup.
Finally, please try to email me if you have problems. I don't check this page very often so bug reports tend to be missed if you only post them here! I only noticed all the new comments today.

Found the problem with the preferences: the download was called "iTunes_bar.widget", but the old file was called "iTunes Bar.widget". Which is going to be standard? A different file name creates a different preferences file.

I am also unable to resize either the bar or the artwork window. Very unfortunate. For some reason, 4.0.1 ignored all of my 4.0 preferences, too (had to go through and change all the defaults again).
Hooray for a new version without polling, though! I'm looking forward to it.

Hi I'm the author of the widget. I submitted a small update (4.0.1) last week which fixes skin installation when running in the new version of the widget engine (version 4). It'll be here as soon as it gets 'approved'!
Meanwhile, I'm continuing work on a substantial update which will finally get rid of the 'polling' behavior in favor of a event-based mechanism for getting iTunes updates. That means no more un-quittable iTunes syndrome. So stay tuned :)

Doesn't work with the upgraded iTunes. Actually I don't think any iTunes widget does. The new iTunes Version and Engine number: 7.0.1.59. Otherwise this is excellent widget. I love it so much its small and adjustable and it fits right above the informer bar and alongside the Info101 widget.

Strange thing. For the first week of so after installing iTunes 7, iTunes Bar would act strangely. It would interact with iTunes as expected but the song info window would remain the same song even after a dozen or so songs have past. Today, I launched iTunes Bar and all is well. Go figure.

THE best widget out there to control iTunes. The skins are fantastic, especially the transparent text ones. The album art is a great add, and the the ability to turn it on or off is even better. You get access to all of your playlists too!! What more could you ask for?

I would love this to take over for my MMD3 Winamp skin, but I have one problem with it, and I don't know if it'd be possible to fix. I have Winamp set to 20% opacity when inactive, and 80% at hover-over. Where I have it, I need to see what's underneath the player, but I want to be able to control the player at all times. Is there a way to include a hover-over active function or something along those lines?

I really like this widget but i'm having a problem with it. I have the latest version of iTunes and Windows XP. The problem is that when I close iTunes and then open it back up, the widget no longer does anything. I have to remove the widget and then add it back on to get iTunes to work with it. It would also be great if you had the options for it to stay on top of other windows and to resize the art covers to a larger size. But all in all, an awsome widget!

Thanks for all your comments! I'm working on version 4 of iTunes Bar, and it will definitely include artwork resizing, will _probably_ include playlist selection on Windows (it already works on Mac) and _maybe_ export artwork to iTunes (this one's hard!). That and a few other cool stuff like falling back on Amazon Japan for artwork. Any other international Amazon you'd like me to include? Probably due in mid-January.
Christopher: the iTunes button simply unminimizes the iTunes window. You're the first person to report a problem like that. Remember to email me if you need help troubleshooting (do About iTunes Bar on the widget contextual menu or look in the Read me file in the zip archive).

HELP! I installed this widget about two weeks ago, and everything worked fine until last week. I clicked the "open iTunes" icon for the first time and iTunes crashed ("encountered an error and needs to close"). Since then I've updated, uninstalled, and reinstalled all of the programs involved (iTunes, Konfabulator, and the widget itself). I've even edited registry keys for iTunes using directions I found in a forum, but iTunes will not open anymore. It always crashes with "iTunes has encountered an error and needs to close". I've tried everything I can think of and I can't get iTunes to open again. The people in the forums on the iTunes website believe the problem lies with the widget or Konfabulator because none of their suggestions for iTunes repair worked. Does anyone have any suggestions? Exactly what does that little "open iTunes" button do? Help, I need my iTunes back!

HOW do you take your own artwork off the song??? 3. please could you make it so the keyboard buttons on windows could control the buttons on the widget example: those extra buttons!!! Great Work A four star!

In addition to the "Save Artwork As..." context menu option in the artwork viewer, it would be great if you could add a "Copy Artwork" option to facilitate adding covers quickly and easily via iTunes. Use case is 1. Copy artwork from your widget; 2. Open iTunes and select all tracks for the album; 3. Right-click in the artwork window and click on "Paste". That would be excellent!

great widget. almost perfect. Resize artcover ?
some minor imperfections: -The icon for bringing up itunes would be better without the grey background (thus just the white musicsymbol)(default white skin) -The drag me bar should be invisible or smaller to enhance smoothness (default white skin)
Thanks for such a useful widget !

There aren't any differences in iTunes 6 that I know of that would cause problems (and works fine for me and a few other people who I've heard from)... you might want to check if other iTunes widgets also have trouble. If it's just this widget with glitches, email me and I'll try to help.

This is a great widget, however I am having a little problem when I have it open and I quit itunes it will quit and then just start up right away again and takes 2 or three times before it quits. I find that if I quit the widget first it quits the first time every time, so I am thinking that it is a widget thing. I have byteController open as well if that could have something to do with it. Just thought I would post it and see if anyone else is getting the same thing. I was going to email the programmer but there is no link here for his email, so I did this. thanks, love the functionality of it, great job.

Let me start off by saying you have created an excellent widget!
I do have one issue to report. When playing a radio stream I end up with a lot of empty space where the progress bar should be. Since iTunes doesn't draw a progress bar for streams this is understandable but it does bring up the following question. Can you add a preference to show the progress bar or not?

Just want to ask, if anybody could manage to use the Bar with iTunes 5. Neither Version 3 nor Version 3.1 work with iTunes 5. I mean, I can use Play, Forward, Pause, Stop and the Title is displayed. But the Cover is not shown anymore and I can't use the iTunes Launch Button. With iTunes 4.9 it worked perfectly alright. So if anybody know something please answer!
(PS: Does anybody know "iTunes Alarm" for Windows?)

I must say after trying other iTunes widgets this one worked the best for me. What I am trying to do with it is have it sit on the blank space on my windows xp taskbar, where the quicklaunch icons go... this way, i can see it no matter what app i am in, and its not interfering with scroll bars etc etc, and its well.. basically consistent! However, once i place the bar over the taskbar, everything works fine EXCEPT for when i click on something on the taskbar, then it disappears behind the taskbar! Is there a mode where it can stay floating above EVERYTHING? I know that the taskbar is technically the very very very most topmost thing in all of the OS, but still there must be some way for the iTunes bar not to disappear under it when the taskbar gains focus. Well thanks for reading and post here if you find out any way to get it running properly! other than that, awesome job man.

Best of the itunes add-ins i've triedso far. my biggest issue is artwork. it flashes full picture, then only shows top 1/3 or so with bottom greyed, on some pics. other minor thing I find is on the transp. white skin, when changing volume the pixels seem offset, and I have to adjust/compensate to right.
Otherwise, loving it.

An update to (hopefully) fix the alt-F4 issue is queued for the gallery -- it'll be available as soon as it's reviewed.
The widget should always be getting artwork from the file first, and I don't know why it's not working for some of you. I'll try to look into it when I get a chance. The issue with some artwork getting "stuck", I believe, is a bug in Konfabulator so a future version will probably fix this.

I really like this, especially the artwork window, which is where I have my issues. If it does not find the mp3 data, it's supposed to search Amazon, right? Sometimes it ignores my existing art & uses something totally wrong that it finds. Any way to override the Amazon search?
Also, sometimes, the artwork for a song will get 'stuck' there for the next several songs. Any way to refresh?
I do have it set to display none if it can't find the art, but sometimes even that gets stuck.
Thanks for a Great Widget!

I love the transparent series, as well as the glass ones. The only thing is that they look blurred. I'm not sure if its a computer issue or its the widget itself. But it would be nice if the detail was brought up a notch. Otherwise, wonderful! I love it that I can just play, pause and do it all without going through a series of clicks...

Skins are working just fine on WinXP with Konfabulator 2.1.1. The iTunes open/min/max control seems to work just fine as well, tested on XP and 2000 today.
Now if only iTunes wasn't such a resource hog... I use FooBar2000 a lot when I want a small footprint, but iTunes is "homebase" for the iPod.

Well, I've found the way to change skins in XP. Just add a group in the skin manager and then open My Computer without close the manager and navigate to the folder where the skins are located (usually My DocumentsMy WidgetsiTunes Bar Skins). Then just copy the skins to the new group folder. After that you will be able to see the skins into the new group in manager.
It's a bit confusing but works for me. At least until the next version arrives.
By the way Daniel, it would be great if you forces the widget to find the art stored into the mp3 folder BEFORE downloading. That would be great news for windows users as we usually have cover art as Folder.jpg into each mp3 folder.
Thx a lot.

Hi DD, It seems that MP3s w/ progressive scan JPGs that were made by d&d JPGs into iTunes don't show up in your art window. I have tested by replacing the art w/ baseline JPGs and works fine. Still every once in a while, an image won't load & skipping out of the track and back in will load it. Perhaps keep checking every x seconds if no art found. Am dying to resize that window!

Love it. Will wait patiently for windows skinning to work again. One idea, what about being able to change the order of the field display. you can turn fields off, but you can't control what order they appear in. For instance I think it would be nice to display as 'title, rating, artist, album'. Oh, and an option to double-click for the lyrics would be nice. Sometimes I'm trying to click some where on the bar and the lyrics accidently popup when I don't need them.

I *LOVE* this widget! I LOVE LOVE LOVE the album art display! Most of my MP3's have art attached. Can the art display please maintain aspect ratio? (Composer's portraits sure look funny squished into a square) Also, can the art display be bigger? Much bigger? as in Album Art Desktop ?!? That would be a sick bomb. I've only had some slight issues with the desktop art not updating correctly when skipping back and forth through tracks (some already played) I've had just a few cases of a new song having a previous tracks's art after skipping back and forth through tracks. A skin for an album art frame might be nice.

Email me if you have trouble -- I can't get enough info through this comments page. In response to some comments: artwork should already be coming from the mp3/aac file before checking Amaazon. As for exporting artwork to iTunes, I hope to implement this in the future, but it's surprisingly difficult. I once started implementing control strings to customize the display, but the complexity of specifying conditional separators made me cringe. Maybe I'll have a stab at it again some day...

I'd give it four stars for sure (the skins are great) -- but the artwork window has not displayed anything at all (most of my covers are already stored with the mp3s). (In contrast, it displays them properly in the iTunes Companion widget.) Help, please?

I'm lovin' it, Daniel.
One feature I'd really like is to have the option of showing the year right next to the album (within brackets or parenthesis, to separate it). Actually, what would make it even more awesome is if one could define a string to show in the little window. You can create variables and let people have the option of defining their own strings. Variables could include the obvious ones, like album, artist, song title, and time elapsed/remaining/total, and other less used but still useful variables, like year, rating, playcount, track number, genre and whether or not it's part of a compilation. For those users who don't want to define their own strings, you could include maybe two or three predefined simple strings, like "%song%, by %artist%, from %album%".
In my case, I'd like to use:
'%song%', by %artist%, track &tracknumber% from the album %album% %compilation%[%year%]
(the value of the variable "%compilation%" being "(compilation) " if true, and null if fa

Great Widget... I had stopped using for a while because of problems with Tiger and K2 but this version seems good.
One problem - I can't get the hot keys to work with F1, F2, F3, F4, they always worked in the past.

I've told you before, this is THE iTunes widget, I love it, and V 3.0 is great I have just 2 features to ask. 1. Can the Artwork Window first look if you have the artwork on iTunes before searching Amazon??? 2. If you have no artwork in iTunes can you make it put the one found on Amazon on iTunes???
I think those 2 would make it faster, and great

The Album Art window seems to work very well, but could you have an option for no drop shadow on the album art (just the outline)? I would like to have the album art 'sit' on the desktop, not float above it...

"To compress your completed skin, do "zip -j <SkinName>.iTunesBarSkin <SkinFolder>/*" from the command like."
from the command like? this in the terminal? i tried that and it didn't work. please make it clearer on how to compress the skins.

i dropped this widget, when i started having problems with it. now i got it again and noticed you changed something about the skins. previous versions of skins let me "show package contents", so i could edit the skin, but now i can't for some reason. i'd love to use the blue glass skin, but without controls, itunes button or volume control.
2 stars, until i can edit the skins.

I was having the same problem as other people (widget wouldn't load, message about not being a valid widget). Tried deleting itunes Bar.widget folder in Local Settingsapplication datapixoriakonfabulator folder and that made the error go away, but I still couldn't see the widget. Finally fixed it by deleting the iTunes Bar folder under Widget data (in the same folder).

I have a feeling the problem you're having (Carlo and Max) are related to Konfabulator rather than iTunes Bar -- try contacting support(AT)konfabulator(DOT)com and see if they can help you. Otherwise, email me directly and we can try to work it out. My email address is in the About box of the widget.

That's a great idea, to drag-n-drop a skin onto the widget to load it. Will be done in the next version (which might not be for a little while, so no breath-holding, please).
As for zipping up a skin, the command needs a trailing "/*" -- "zip -j <SkinName>.iTunesBarSkin <SkinFolder>/*" -- it's a typo in the About file. I'll provide a way to make it easier to develop skins in the next version.

Would it be possible to make the iTunes Bar load a skin when it's dragged and dropped on the controller? Also, whenever I try to zip a skin (through the Terminal) it returns: "zip: No match." If I try to run it as a new command, I get: "zip error: Nothing to do!" Luckily, the included skins are awesome enough that it doesn't bother me too much.

I wanted to say thanks to all the people that have donated -- I appreciate it a lot! I'll try to incorporate your suggestions, like having elapsed/remaining time instead of total.
In answer to Logan's question: there's no such thing as bundles in Windows so I had to devise a new file format for skins. .iTunesBarSkin files are actually zip archives -- change their file extension to .zip and decompress it the usual way. To compress the folder, do "zip -j <SkinName>.iTunesBarSkin <SkinFolder>" from the command line. Email me if you have trouble.

Hello everyone. Thanks as always for your comments -- I really appreciate them. I'm working on version 2.3 right now which will be cross-platform. I recently got a copy of VirtualPC and realized that I can buy XP for cheap at my school computer store, so I can finally test on a PC now. Also, 2.3 lyrics searching can interface with widgets like Sing That iTune!. If Konfabulator 2.0 is released soon enough, I might be able to include some more feature. See you soon!

i used to really love this widget, but i noticed it has some bugs now that came with its new features. i don't like having the song info, rating or lyrics thing, so i shrink it to a short bar, but the rating thing goes over the itunes button, even though i have rating turned off. its very annoying. if i want to rate my music, i would go rate it in itunes or via that rate widget someone made.
so until that issue is fixed, i can't give you full stars, sorry.

If you want the original Transparent skins, follow these simple instructions: 1) Control-click on the Transparent Black/White.bundle file in the Finder and do Show Package Contents. 2)Go into the Contents folder and open Skin Info.xml with a text editor. Change "<src>bg.png</src>" on line 35 to "<src>blank.png</src>". That's it. But don't you find it impossible to hit the buttons when there's no background?

[...oops, got cut off. See the next comment for the first half of this message.]
frebe - I've added Lyrics Robot to the lyrics search in the upcoming 2.2.0. Can't do goLyrics because of the way it queries the search engine.
telos - It's actually pretty hard to include options for different text layouts, and you can see how crowded the prefs panel is already. An upcoming version of K is supposed to allow for bigger prefs panels so it could be a possibility in the future...
Thanks everyone for your comments! Remember if you need me to get back to you quickly, email is better as I don't check here very often (see About box for email address).

Hi all -- I haven't updated in a while so I'll do some catching up.
First of all, pcote - thanks for pointing out the rollover zone issue. I had fixed the problem immediately after K 1.6 was released (which had caused the problem) but forgot to upload it. 2.2.0 was going to be a bit more substantial but I've submitted it to the gallery for approval with that bug fix and a few other smaller stuff, so hopefully that'll be available within a week.
And to everyone that wanted int'l characters to show up instead of ?'s -- if you haven't noticed already, the latest version of Konfabulator fixes this issue. Kudos to Arlo and Perry!
Gramage - showing actual remaining time is a bit annoying currently because it only updates every 4 seconds and looks very sluggish. There is a way to update every second without polling iTunes every second, but that'll take some substantial work so I haven't worked that in there yet... maybe in the semi-near future...
frebe - I've added Lyrics Robo

Rollover zones (clickable zones) are BAD... especially with the glass themes. You need to place the mouse EXACTLY over the wanted button before clicking it. Also, there should be a way to lock the bar in place because bad rollover zones often leads into moving the bar out of place.
Great widget but needs theses thing to be fixed before being perfect.

EXCELLENT! I love the iTunes bar, especially the ability to add ratings on the fly, and both library and streaming radio station name/artist/track title. No problems with the default arrangement of the respective controls as the developer has put a lot of thought for the most logical arrangement. I hide the dock automatically so the itunes launcher is very useful. In my opinion, the best place to put iTunes bar is at the bottom of the screen.

however, it would be cool to have the option to display/not display the volume control, progress bar and, in particular, the (imho rather useless) iTunes link.

Probably the most used widget I have, totally awesome. It's strange, I have a bigger monitor now, but I'm even more concerned with saving space... Which this does an amazing job of.
Anyways, one suggetion: Option to show remaining time, not just total time. Or maybe remaining time instead of the progress bar. I like to know exactly how much time I have left (dunno why...).
That's no reason to take off a star though, nice job :)

Best widget I have, but one suggestion, add a feature that lets you change the rating of a song. I always have iTunes Bar and TuneRater running at the same time, wastes space. Maybe you could add the stars somewhere in the bar and make them clickable to change the rating of the current song like in Tune Rater. Keep up the amazing work.

This is a great widget! I've been using it for quite some time and have found it very useful.

Wicked-sweet. The only thing I could possibly suggest is a way to change playlists, but I shouldn't even mention it because this widget is so convenient and complete that the four star rating is unavoidable.

The ??? display of non-ASCII characters is due to a current Konfabulator limitation. The next (?) version of K should fix this automagically ;)

I've been using this fantastic little widget for a bit now. I enjoy it thoroughly and it's been of utmost use during unexpected phone calls, and being able to hide everything about iTunes. I stick this little widget right below my menubar, right where it fits in best :D

Great widget. Any chance in supporting the display of double-byte (East Asian such as Chinese) language track names? It is showing up as ??? ???? right now in the Arist and Track Name display. Thanks!

Robert: try doing Repair Disk Permissions with Disk Utility. This seems to fix random breakages. If you still have problems, feel free to email me at the address in the About box with details.

Good call, Mick. I'd been meaning to do that for a while but had been putting it off -- until now ;) I think (I hope) this will be the last update in a while, anyways.

Nice that you continue to work on this, but getting weekly reminders that a new version is available when I start up is getting annoying. How about a way to disable that function in the preferences?

Thanks for the suggestions. Disabling "click-through" for the lyrics search is pretty much done, and probably will be released with next weekend's updates. Selecting a playlist from the widget will take some serious work, which I'm afraid I won't have time for. You might wanna check out Knut August Johansen's excellent Itunes Companion widget (I usually have that widget running alongside mine). As for "automatically hide iTunes," I'm not sure what you mean. How do you envision this happening?

Wow. i cant understand why i didnt try it earlier. its as unobtrusive as i always wished it to be. Thank you.
but would it be possible to remotley select the different playlist of iTunes so that we'd only have to rely on your little sweetness? ;) furthermore what about a feature that would automatically hide iTunes?
cheerz. and continue the good work.

I love the new lyrics search feature, but I feel it is too easy to click on accidently. It would be nice if you had to click and select the iTunes bar before you clicked on the name to open up the lyrics search.

iTunes bar is my favourite widget by far.
I actually modded mine a bit yesterday. It's not a completely new skin as such, i've just changed the black skin (size/colour) so that it matches my dock. you can see it here,
http://www.spymac.com/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=63841
As i said, it's not really a new skin, but if anyone wants it (or wants to know how it's made) just mail me @spymac.

Thanks for all the kind words :)
Tim, I don't include time displays because currently the widget only polls iTunes every 4 seconds and a time display looks annoyingly sluggish at that refresh rate. I'm reluctant to poll iTunes any more than it does currently for performance reasons, and because it would make the iTunes-can't-quit problem worse (which seems to be back with Panther, unfortunately.)
As for having options to select what to display -- I like the idea. It's done (for 2.1.2)!

This is one of my favorites.
A couple of possible ideas. There is the progress bar, what about an optional time elapsed or remaining as well?
What about making what is displayed as options? Such as, have the option of displaying albulm, track number, or other information that could be displayed.
Great work!

This is the best iTunes control bar out of all of them. The actual bar is incredibly useful, but even better are the keyboard shortcuts to pause, play, skip, and do other things without having to move the mouse at all. Excellent widget.

Please email with details if you have problems -- I really would like to eliminate any bugs. Having said that, v2.1 with bug fixes, new skins and many other improvements should be up in a few days so please try it and see if you still have problems.
Meanwhile, in my infinite wisdom I managed to nuke my entire Documents folder, so I'm hoping v2.1 is safely in Arlo and Perry's hands. Or else...

ATTENTION SKINNERS: I'd love to include more skins with iTunes Bar. Please look inside the package (iTunes Bar.widget/Contents/Resources/Skins/) for information about making and sending me skins.
