Widget Maker
Harry Whitfield

Widget Maker is a construction tool for Yahoo! Widgets.

A form-filling interface is provided to assist in the generation of the XML script of a Widget. Users still have to create images and write the JavaScript code needed to provide the Widget's functionality.

1.3 - major update for Yahoo! Widgets 3.

2.1 - updated to run on Yahoo! Widgets 4.0.
2.1.1 - internal changes.
2.2 - updated with most Yahoo! Widgets 4.0 features.
2.2.1 - workaround for problem with code editing.

technical_13; If you make a mistake, you can generally cancel the current entry. However, you do then have to repeat that entry. I find that it is generally better to keep going and fix any errors in the final ouput text, which, in any case, always needs some editing. Another method of working, which I often use, is to copy and paste text into another file as I go along.

Hunter890: Because of the structure of the Widget, there's no real prospect of my making a very different user interface. This widget was intended to be a stop-gap, as there has always been a suggestion that the developers would (soon) make a Widget development tool. If you have suggestions for minor changes, I will consider them, but a major rewrite in not on the cards.

Not too shabby, however it is quite a pain when your going along and realize that you misspelled something and click on widget to fix it and have to start over from scratch. Can you make it remember what text was entered somehow? I'll admit I'm somewhere between a beginner and intermediate Widget designer, I can see lots of promiss for this widget with some minor tweaking.. Thanks.

zoe: Assuming that you have already installed the Yahoo! Widget Engine, Widget Maker requires no installation, so I totally fail to understand your comment. Perhaps, you should post in the appropriate forum.

Raihan: Read the Konfabulator Tutorial and the Konfabulator Reference Manual. Modify an existing widget and write one or two simple widgets "by hand". Then read the Widget Maker PDF file. It should then be pretty obvious what you have to do. Widget Maker is tool for those who already know how to build widgets. It is of no use to complete beginners.

Craig: Please see the item of December 28, 2004 (below). When you've worked through the Tutorial and the Reference Manual referred to on the Workshop pages and have written one of two widgets, it will be pretty obvious how to use Widget Maker.

I've made an update that uses more shorter forms to get around this bug in Windows. It will probably be available in the next couple of weeks.

The widget maker WINDOW creator feature is not able to save. It runs past the bottom of my WIN XP screen. This is a windows bug that sometimes happens when apps use large or scrolling popup or message type windows for inputing of data. so I cannot even tab to the save or cancel button. This is only happening on the window creator screen. Suggest making it wizard like more than one step to cut down on length of window.?

Amazing, just downloaded because I lost my old copy, and it just happens that it was updated with K2 abilities! Excellent widget. I use it every time I create a new widget.

Pat: Widget Maker is probably not suitable for beginner widget writers. There are references to documentation about Konfabulator widgets and JavaScript on the Workshop pages of this web site.

Beginner widget writers should read the Reference Manual and look at the way existing widgets are written. The easiest way to start is probably to modify an existing widget.

Widget Maker is more suited to programmers who already have some experience of making widgets. What it does is present forms which the programmer fills in to define the various objects which make up a widget. It takes the agony out of writing the xml part of a widget. The writer still has to create images and write JavaScript code.
