The new version fixes the problem. Each instance now restarts where I left it. Super. Many Thanks, Ross.

Hiys. I'm still having the spawning probs and I'm using the latest version. I have 4 instances running with a few other widgets that I drag onto my second monitor to act as live photoframe of sorts. Every time I have to restart yahoo widgets such as on a reboot, all of the other widgets maintain their last positions apart from each instance of webimages, which restart towards the top left of my primary monitor all on top of each other. Can anything be done to solve this problem? Cheers.

gazzagaryq: Yahoo! Widgets 4 introduced a change in the way preferences are handled on Windows. This causes the Widget to behave as you describe. The change in behavior was an unintended side-effect of changes made to implement the dock. We are still considering how best to restore the old behavior. The Widget still behaves as intended on the Macintosh.

Ok, Thanks and one other thing. When I restart my pc, I want webimages to display 3 different images beside each other on the desktop. What currently happens is all 3 images are behind one another (spawned on top of each other) and I have to move them into their correct position.

WebImages was designed to display images. However, it can play some audio media and display some video media. Because video cannot be rendered in a Konfabulator window, the Widget has to use external applications or plug-ins to render video. On Windows, there is no easy way to determine a file's type if there is no file extension and many URLs don't have file extensions. On the Macintosh, there is a way to determine the type of a file that has no extension.
When an extension is present or can be inferred, WebImages tries to do the following: Media with extensions .mov and .avi are played in QuickTime, .wma, .wmv, .wm and .asf are played in Windows Media Player, .ra, and .rm are played in RealPlayer. Metafiles with extensions .wax, .wvx, .asx and .ram are played in WMP or RP as appropriate. Sound files with extensions .aif, .au, .mp3, .snd, .wav are played directly by the Widget.

that only needs a "copy&paste new URLs" to make my dream. I´m pretty sure after my searchs that creating "hierarquical menus" is out of bounds for me (a pity. imagine some organized by "regions", "states" or "genres"). but I prefer to extend it to the 200 allowed "quick links". Maybe a new generation of "streaming player widgets" from all the world are waiting for some of this kind. I guess better than one for each radio (as by now)..... Thanks in advance, and sorry if you keep reading till here.

However, it currently has no provision for mjpg, but I might be able to allow that. Do you have sample URLs? September 7, 2005 " As many of the URLs don´t have an extension, the YWI says:"No image or sound selected", or some like that and refuses to play. want samples?. these opens pasting the adress at the WMP: http://streammax.alsolnet.com/mdqteleweb other works with RealPlayer/VLC/Media Player Classic if the starting string (adress) is mms:/, as at (radio)"mms://streammitre.uigc.net/mitrevivo" If we can select a default player in preferences, maybe adding the path (I found 1 widget that works with VLC this way), no matter the extension, we can use the YWI as a TV set. (Of course selecting the refresh freq. to 24 hs. (or what about a "none" option.)) I know this is not what YWI was designed for, but I lack of programming habilities, and keep going from 1 widget to another searching for that only needs a "copy&paste new URL

Hi all. At least a cool & great widget!. Even if it doesn´t fill my needs, it´s still usefull.
btw, I´ve been looking a LOT of webcams and radio widgets but, what about video streaming widgets?!. Have found only 1 and without working menus (Streaming Tv Widget). And the author looks to me more interested in money than sharing the code, but that doesn´t matter. I had made a compilation from all the internet webtv stream links available in my country (Argentina) and want to share it with locals and those living in other countries (so what better than yahoo widgets), but the program only opens those with the .asx, .wvx extension. :( then I was reading aaallll the 13 pages with posts, and read Harry writing: "Harry Whitfield Joe: Konfabulator cannot currently display any movie streams. On the Macintosh only, WebImages invokes QuickTime Player, RealPlayer or Windows Media Player to display streams in separate windows. However, it currently has no provision for mjpg,

From the authors: After downloading WebImages 3.0.2, users should rename the Web Images.widget file so that it is called WebImages.widget (i.e. delete the space in the middle of the name). This will enable the Widget to access preferences and locations entered previously.
On Windows, with Yahoo! Widgets 4.0, spawned Widgets will all use the parent's preferences. This is caused by an unexpected change in the way the Widget Engine handles the preferences.

Great Widget. Not sure if you take requests, but would like to see the following features: 1) Make it easier to edit the locations...many times a website changes their source and the location needs to be modified. If no image is displayed, it's impossible to edit the location. Suggest a right-click opens menu to select edit or delete or add locations funstion, which opens another menu to easily select the location you wish to edit or delete. 2) Eliminate all the other buttons except for the forward button so the the title of the location can be displayed. No reason why those buttons can't be added in the menu instead. Also, how about adding a stop (pause) button? Thanks for your hard work.

ellobobill: Please read the section "Special Startup Mode" that is in the Help.pdf file that is included inside the Widget (you can unzip a copy of the .widget file to find it). I've also uploaded a copy of the Help.pdf file here: http://g7awz.users.btopenworld.com/Beta/WebImagesHelp.pdf
The chances are that you have an invalid URL. In "Special Startup Mode" you can delete suspect URLs. If that does not help, please make a full report in the appropriate Konfabulator forum, with your full system details, etc.

CJ: You can make a debug.txt file in Notepad or any plain-text editor. It does not matter what it contains - it can even be empty. Put the file in the WebImages system.widgetDataFolder (which is also called WebImages.widget) alongside the Resources and Spawns folders. Then start WebImages. It will then start in a Special Mode which enables you to delete (bad) URLs.

From the manual enclosd with the widget: Special Startup Mode It can occasionally happen that a user enters an invalid URL, which causes WebImages to fail and prevents it from restarting normally. The invalid URL could be deleted from the widget's .plist file on the Macintosh or from the Windows Registry, but these operations are likely to be error prone. To get around this problem, WebImages has a special startup mode. If there is a file called debug.txt in a widget's or a spawn's system.widgetDataFolder, then the widget or spawn puts up a dialog as it starts which asks the user if she would like to delete URLs. If the user says "yes", it puts up the delete dialog (as if the wrench button had been used). This is repeated until the user says "no". After that the widget or spawn starts as normal. This saves the user from editing .plist files on the Macintosh or the Registry on Windows. On the Macintosh, the system.widgetDataFolder is normally located a

I've been using this great widget for some time now but recently wanted to change the picture URL. I think I wrongly clicked on a non-picture URL and now the widget gets stuck on "Loading image..." when it opens. The only way I can close it is thru Task Manager, nothing on the widget will respond. I have deleted the widget files and reloaded them but still have the same problem. Is there a way, or can there be, to reset the widget. I found it so useful. Thanks.

Thanks Harry for the quick reply...,
But the problem is that the picture URL is not static. Let me try to explain again: the primary url is: http://www.flickr.com/explore/ this brings back an html page that contains another url which is dynamic: http://static.flickr.com/89/253499579_48cb2d6eca.jpg meaning the /89/253499579_48cb2d6eca.jpg changes each time...
If i put the picture in the primary URL it will always fetch me the same picture... I need somehow to put this URL http://www.flickr.com/explore/ as primary... and to fetch the picture from this dynamic URL: http://static.flickr.com/XX/XXXXXX.jpg
please advice... thanks! :)

But I am having a hard time retrieving images from Flickr. I want to update my webimages with pictures from Explore Flickr. This is the main url: http://www.flickr.com/explore/ but the picture itself is taken from another url: <img src="http://static.flickr.com/89/253499579_48cb2d6eca.jpg"
Can webimages handle this type of format?
What values should be in: Primary URL: ? Prefix String: ? Start String: ? End String: ? Suffix String: ?
thanks in advance!

I love the widget. I have noticed an unusual bug, I hope this is the correct place to post such a finding. First I set up the widget to grab the Picture of the day at worth1000.com This was uneventful and works great. I then attempted to set up the Picture of the day at Freakingnews.com I mention both of these websites because they are essentially identical in their coding to retrieve images. I could not configure FreakingNews. I then started some trials by grabbing text from the FreakingNews webpage. It is as though the widget can't buffer enough code to get to the picture. In text mode, if I enter a unique start string, such as: IFRAME and an appropriate suffix string, WebImages displays the appropriate html text. If I try a start string further down the page, I receive the following error: Could not find secondary URL or requested data in http://www.freakingnews.com/potd.asp

Rob: http://g7awz.users.btopenworld.com/Beta/WebImages289.zip is an untested trial version for you to play with. It uses a Netscape cookie file with the -b CURL option. Harry: I just found/checked out the curl docs under the YWE installation - and there's a big section on cookies in the MANUAL. It looks like -b will take a cookie file name (Netscape format cookie file). I would hope it's the same curl on the Mac.

The curl docs I have show the -b/--cookie takes a parameter of either name=string - so you can set your own cookies (probably acceptable solution) or filename - I set it to my firefox cookie file and when I ran curl on the command-line it successfully pulled the website text from the site that needed cookies (for login). Does the Mac version support the parameter for the --cookie parameter?

Hi Harry,
Well, the one site I was trying to get images from needed a login, and Web Images wouldn't get it and neither would curl when run on the command-line - but when curl with the (I think) -y parameter to tell it to use existing local cookies, it did get the image. So I figured if there was a checkbox in Web Images that, when checked and the method was 'curl' it would pass that same parameter. So users would have to have their login's stored in cookies, but for those that did, it would let them use Web Images for those sites.

Your widget is excellent, however I am having difficulty getting it to see my content. I have a software running on my server called "Absolute Content Rotator" I created a page that displays a daily scheduled image, but I can't get the widget to read it. The page simply refers to an .asp script, so there is no image source value. Can I use your widget with this software? Hello Harry - great widget! Having fun figuring out the right combination of preferences to get all sorts of web images. Works really well - except if I need to log in to a site. Like Renderosity for example - I'd love to be able to have the latest new images get shown periodically with Web Images but the site requires I be logged in to my account. Is there a way username/password/etc. could be gathered and passed to the site? (Or a way to set parameters to curl to use cookies?)
Thanks for a great widget!

Ok since you told me about this widget from our Imageview discussion.
It Works great but, could you do the hide controls on startup like you did on the imageview.
Once again you guys astound me. Thanks for making my time in front of the computer a more enjoyable experience.

Can you think of an easy way to add a configurable setting that would allow a delay between the access to the primary url and grabbing the image it greps from the html? I have a web cam (on a php page) that grabs a snapshot once the page is accessed. It takes a second or two for the image to be saved to disk. I am finding that this widget works a lot of the time, but it sometimes reports that the .jpg url that it got from the initial web page source is not present. I was trying to add a sleep to the getSecondary() function, but a sleep in Java does not seem to be easy to do. thanks.

ck: You could add a delay in your server (script) so that you only return the primary web page to the widget after you are sure that the jpg had been written to disk.
You should be able to add a sleep(milliseconds) call in the widget's javascript code, in much the way you have tried. To make it variable in length, you would need a preference.

Rick and Harry, I've been using this widget and it is one of my favorites. However there is one webcam that I am wondering if it will work or not. The web cam is java based and allows users to control the direction of the webcam for about 30 seconds.

Wow, I have been looking for something like this for years. Really...since 2002. Works great.
A question though. The web images in which I am interested are only updated during set times during the day. Anyway to have a start and stop time that can be individualized for every day of the week? Just thought I'd ask.
This is so good...so good...

William: WebImages has a special start-up mode (see manual) which allows you to delete URLs which cause problems - you don't need to hack the Windows Registry. On occasions when you can't use the widget's logging to file option, you could start the widget in YWE's debug mode. The widget's own logfile and/or the debug log are very helpful in tracing errors.
The widget should not crash when you use an invalid URL - I'll try to find an explanation for that and fix it.

Here's one for you. I loaded up Yahoo Widgets today and your widget crashed. It gave me 'Unable to load program...". Now, it has been running OK sence the last update, so what's up? This paticular widget was showing images from deviantART. After comparing the entry in the registry for this widget against the addresses at deviantART I noticed that deviantART had changed its image server for browsing wallpaper images. It added a 'wp' to the front of the URL. Updated the registry entry and all is OK.
You need some type of mechanism that would allow your program to continue to work when it runs into an invalid URL, rather than just crashing.

I'm using Web Images 2.8.3 with Widget Engine 3.1.2(100) Windows XP SP2 I have a single link to the following image: http://www.weblinks247.com/exrate/exr24_ca_en_2.gif which I refresh every 5 minutes (topmost window), to watch the exchange rate while I work. It will run for 30 minutes or up to 3 to 4 hours, then it locks up (can't move the window, can't access controls, can't close) and uses lots of CPU. I have to end task with Windows Task Manager Only other widget running is PostIt. Any idea's? PostIt continues to run OK when this happens.. Other than this, excellent widget!

CDB:You can't display the composite map image with WebImages. The initial page does not have links to the eleven camera images - the links are to eleven web pages - so you can't pick up the image links from the initial page. However, the page and image links look fairly static, so you might be able to use the image links directly as primary URLs.

Pending a fix for YWE 3.1(.1), there is simple fix for Mac OS X users. WebImages is distributed as a cross-platform zipped widget. If you change its extension to "zip" then unzip it, you will have a Macintosh packaged widget. This does not suffer from the bug in YWE 3.1(.1).

On Mac OS X, YWE stores preferences in a Library folder. On Windows, they are stored in the Windows Registry, which I have always regarded as a bad design choice. The obvious other place to store preferences would be in the widget's data folder. Unfortunately, we currently have a situation on the Macintosh version of YWE (3.1, 3.1.1) where the data folder is being overwritten whenever a widget starts. No doubt, this will be fixed in short order, but it does show that there is nowhere that is entirely safe. The preference saving facility in WebImages allows you to make your own backups and put the files somewhere "safer". I'll think about making it more automatic. [The current bug in YWE also deletes spawned widgets, but not their stored prefernces.]

I take it that the personized configs are stored in the Windows registry. It would be very nice if these could be written to a file instead. I rebuild my OS every 3 - 6 months and retrieving config files from backup is very easy. Retreiving configs from the old registry isn't possible, (as far as I know)...

Excellent Widget. Only problem I am finding is that, if there are any problems and I have to re-start the widget, then I lose all the data in the Quick list. Is this data (ie. webcam URL's etc.) stored in a list for retrieval or do I have to keep my own list and manually re-enter all the cams once the widget is up and running again?
I should add that I have not updated yet to version 2.8, but I am running the previous version with version 3.1 of the engine.
Keep up the good work!

Binary: That's not a quirk/bug -it's a feature! It is a property of the way that sorting text is done. Filenames are treated as text. Digits are not treated any differently from letters. If you want to avoid it, you have to call your images image001, image002, etc.

This widget is great - I was looking at hacking up a widget to do a few of these things - then stumbled on your offering, and it fits my needs perfectly! Only one quirk, when rotating through images (for exampled) Image 1-Image9, if you add Image 10 it puts it between 1 and 2.
There are work arounds that are easy enough... but just thought I'd mention the one quirk. Even with this quirk, I'd give you a fifth star if I could - great work!

Harry: Thank you. It is obvious that the interaction between widgets and the Yahoo! widget engine have effects unknown to the developers of the widgets. FOR INSTANCE: Your spawn feature still does not work on Windows XP sr2, either the 'Web Images' or the "ImageView" widgets. A 'file not found' error is reported every time I have tried this feature, (I just downloaded the newest update today to ImageView, - same problem). I just go and manually copy the widget adding a 2 or 3 at the end of the name and go from their. (I posted this problem previously). It's an engine problem. Hay - I enjoy your work, keep it going! William: WebImages does not explicitly store the fetched html page to disk at all, and it stores the current image in the system.widgetDataFolder, as previously described. Any other copies you are seeing elsewhere on your system are being put there by the internal operations of the Widget Engine, over which I have no control (and no knowledge). I don't use Windows, and the behavior on MacOS is not necessarily the same. The Widget Engine may well have its own image cache or use standard Windows facilities.

Harry: You are correct, the ...WebImages-XXX is the actual image on the screen. I watched it change as you discribed. HOWEVER their are also multiple images being placed in the 'Temporary Internet Files' directory as I have described. I also find the html file used to pull the image data off of as well. Where your directory has the name of WebImages-XXX, the directory I am speaking of has the actual NAME OF THE FILE FROM THE WEB SITE. As well as the Internet location it was pulled from, and the html file, and the URL of that html file. You are looking in the wrong directory for what I am talking about. Do you have a Windows system so you can check into what I am describing? Where do you park the html file you are pulling the data off of for URL image fetching? This problem was fixed Saturday, it's all academic now. Bill

Harry: FYI : All Yahoo! widgets use the 'C:<slash>Documents and Settings<slash> User<slash> Local Settings<slash> Temporary Internet Files' directory to hold their temp information. My dir has the information from the ticker tape, multi-RSS news feed, weather info, Comix info, WhatsOnTV catche, and two instances of your Web Images. One running Photo.net and one deviantART.com. Currently 50-60 objects changing on the fly. I suspect that if you didn't fix this problem, then Yahoo's programers did. I was e-mailing them before I posted my first notice to you about this problem. It could have been a widget engine problem for all I know. Bill

William: WebImages saves downloaded images in the system.widgetDataFolder. Every time is successfully downloads a new image, it deletes the old image. If you are seeing images in some other temporary folder, that must be being done by the Widget Engine itself and not explicitly by the action of the code in the widget. I've changed nothing since the widget was last updated on 23 February.

Harry: I have been tracking this temp dir every few hours over the weekend.(In a way its fun to see all the images saved - have to move them out of the dir to see, Windows will not open the image files from the temp internet dir though.) Sometime around 2:00 on Saturday 3/11 everything changed. Not only did the piled-up catched images disapear, but your widget now saves between 2 to 6 images dynamically. I can watch it, as each new image is catched, the oldest one of 2 to 6 is removed. Really neat - NICE FIX - whoever did it. My hat is off to you. For what its worth, I have been thinking about this. If you could assign the name of the catched image file for each 'Quick List' entry, such as QL1.jpg, QL2.jpg.... that would take care of this mess for one instance of your widget. You would have to modify the name for each spawned widget.. Hope this helps. (Not an easy fix however you look at it.)

I was cleaning out my Temporary Internet Files directory yesterday. Noticed that your program uses this directory to catch the images being displayed. Unfortunately your program does not delete them after it moves onto the next image, or at the end of the day, or some other interval or size limit --SO-- the directory fills up. Rather quickly, sence we are talking about images, each anywhere from 2k to 2m in size. A new image from 'Photo Gallery' every minute, for 12 to 14 hours each day. Any idea how much disk space that is? Care to multiply that over a two week period? Fortunately I caught this yesterday and cleaned out the directory. Can you do anything to fix this? (I tried setting the save to directory option - it just gave me two directories filling up.) Meanwhile, I am cleaning out the Temporary Internet Files directory manually. Help! William

Great Idea. This is like have windows to the world. I have added a new link that is causing the widget to hang. It won't let me edit anything, just says loading image forever. Is there any way to manually edit the configuration before I launch the widget so it won't hang?
Thanks.

What you are suggesting is within the capability of the Widget Engine, but not within the current capability of this widget. You could use the spawning feature to make four widgets and assemble the four images side by side, with or without their frames. I'll think about making a mouse-over magnify feature similar to the one in ImageView.

Is there a way to display 4 simultaneous images within the same window, and then have the widget focus in on a specific image when mousing over? That way one could look at 4 images at the same time while looking at one 320x240 or 400x300 window for example. Would that feature be within the possibilities of the current Yahoo Widgets engine?

I just love this!! But I have a question: Is it possible for streaming to open in the widget, instead of Windows Mediaplayer? I have several webcams in the list, and then I have this one: http://www.earthcam.com/usa/newyork/timessquare/asx/tsq_stream.asx (with sound too)but when I choose this it opens in Windows Mediaplayer. I would love to have this one in a small widgetwindow(like the others)instead of Mediaplayer all over my desktop! Is it possible?

Harry, I just went to the directory and copied the file manually and went on from their. Added a 2,3,4,5 as your readme file said the spawn would do. All fixed, old problem, done, end, stop, finished, next. Thank you for the quick feedback. I do believe the 'new' Yahoo! widget program removes the 'msi' file after installation, which your spawn looks for. The error message kept asking for the location of the ...msi file, after not finding it in the C:DOCUME~1userLOCALS~1TEMP\_is179Yahoo! Widget Engine.msi which does not exhist. No such directory. Hope this helps.

Nice widget guys! I had one question: I have a webcam at home that sends 25 images to my website via FTP (webcam00.jpg, webcam01.jpg and so on). I would like to cycle thru all of the using the widget but don't want to create 25 separate entries. Is there a way to use the primary URL address and just cycle thru webcam00.jpg, webcam01.jpg, etc.? Thanks!

William: We've tested on another Windows system and we are not seeing your spawning problem. WebImages starts spawns by opening the spawn using Y!WE as the application. It looks as if Y!WE is being confused with something else on your system. It may help if you run WebImages with logging to file switched on, and also run it in debug mode. Send me the log and debug files by email.

William; Spawning is still working correctly on Mac OS X 10.3.9 and Y!WE 3.0.2. I can't check it out on Windows myself, so I've asked Ricky to take a look. I've had no other reports of this, so it may be peculiar to a small number of systems.

I cannot get the spawn to work. It keeps asking for "Yahoo! Widget Engine.msi" which is not on my computer. I believe this is the installer downloaded by "widgetsus.exe" when installing the widget engine, and is removed after completion of installation. Perhaps this is new with v3.02? Anyway, your spawn does not work.

You get exactly what you ask for. Set no sizes, you get the natural image size and shape, unless it needs to be scaled to fit the screen. Set one size, and you'll get that, unless it would be too big. Set both sizes, and you get exactly that, distortion and all. Set one or two maximum sizes and they are enforced. Play around a bit, and you will be able to get what you want. You will only get a distorted image if you set both horizontal and vertical sizes, or you ask for a fixed aspect ratio.

Great Widget!!! Nice work people. Not sure if it's your intent, but I noticed that when I enter both image width and height with same values my pictures are distorted. It’s impossible to predict the next image proportion being displayed on my WebImage. Would like to know if there is an easier way to proportionally control the image size for display on my monitor? Still an excellent widget.

pilotin: Currently the widget limits the size of the image so that it fits in the available screen size. That varies depending on whether the Dock is visible or not. I've altered the behavior of the widget so that the maximum size of image now fits the available screen pretty well exactly, when the frame is turned off. I've also added an option so that you can set the maximum size of image up to twice the available screen size.
If you would like to test the new version, please email me at the address in the about box.

Harry,
Thanks once again for this great update :)
Actualy the maximum image height seems to be something 851 pix (Mac OS version)
Would you think, please (my comment of 23rd aug. '05) to have in the preference panel "geometry " a key to adapt directly the to the screen resolution (the idea is to get an image to fit the screen as a desktop image... (actually, this is impossible to get images like 1440 * 900 or larger) ?
Then, it would be perfect :)

That's a bug that I introduced in the last update - it does not respond to the forward button or the time update if there is only one image in the cycle.
As a temporary fix, enter your URL twice (with different descriptions) and set the cycle images checkbox on. The forward button and time update should then work normally. You can also use the quicklist menu.

kage: There is a long standing "feature" that no-one has ever mentioned. If the QuickList is showing, the window height is restricted to about 700 pixels. I'll fix that the next time I make an update. For now, you could turn the QuickList off.
You can't currently alter the maximum length of the QuickList which is arbitrarily set to 34. You can force entries to the top of the list by prefixing the name with a period. I'll think about an option to allow you to set the maximum length.

I am not sure if it has been asked, but is there a way to make the Max Height larger?
What I mean is... My screen resolution height is 864, some of the images I load are quite big, but I can't seem to get them larger than 680 Max height. The bottom of the Widget gets cut off when I set the widget's Max Height above 680.
Another Question- When I click the Quick List button it shows 34 Images that I am watching, is there a way to set a Max of how many items are shown in the quick list?.. Ya, I have more than 34 POTD images I watch :) Hmm, maybe setting the quick list to, say, 10 images and being able to choose which images are in the quick list?
I understand if it's a "quick list" there's only a specific amount it will show, if not changed that's no problem 'cause when I click the magnifier the drop down menu shows them all... but it would be nifty to tell it how many are in the "quick" and which ones if set to a lower number.

Do you really mean the debug window, or just an alert box? You can turn most alerts off in the preferences. If it was the debug window, you should make a full report with your system platform and system details, and the contents of the debug window. You can report via the appropriate Forum group.

If you set the Primary URL to "http://www.nytimes.com/" and set up appropriate search strings, you should be able to capture the picture of the day such as "http://graphics8.nytimes.com/images/2005/08/23/nyregion/fields.184.jpg". The PDF Manual explains how to set up search strings.

1) in the preference panel "geometry " a key to adapt directly the to the screen resolution (the idea is to get an image to fit the screen as a desktop image... (actually, this is impossible to get large images like 1440 * 900) ?
2) A reset buton to delete all adresses ?
3) Some large webcam images doesn't seem to work properly with your widget, this one doesn't appear or slows the widget very much is it possible to do something ?: http://www.banffgondola.com/cam/images/tmp/view.jpg
Anyway, Thanks of this great widget ! :)

Hello Ricky and Harry :)
Discovered only today thanks to the update. Very beautiful wigget and particularly useful not only for the webcams, but also to supervise the first pages of your favorite(s) daily newspaper(s) : Find the adresses here : http://www.newspaperlinks.com/ and on the principal page, a reproduction of the page of the day is often displayed. As for the webcams, it is enough to make a control-click on the label > and to open the image in a new window to get the URL.
The limit seems to be that on certain sites, the labels of the first pages are named specifically and the update won't work. Examples : These one work : http://www.liberation.fr/img/pdf/UNE.jpg http://digital.guardian.co.uk/today.jpg
This one don't : http://graphics8.nytimes.com/images/2005/08/21/nytfrontpage/scan.jpg ______

I was wondering if you would be able to use this widget as a base to design one with specific URL's (Not user changeable) and where you could link to specific web pages by clicking on the images.
If you would be interested in this project, please let me know.
By the way, GREAT Widget......

On the Macintosh, the preferences are stored in:
~/Library/Preferences/Konfabulator/WebImages.widget.plist ~/Library/Preferences/Konfabulator/WebImagesNNN.kon.plist
You would need to copy all such files to the equivalent directory on the other machine.
On Windows, the preferences are stored in the Windows Registry - I know not where, and I don't know how to save them or restore them to the other machine.

Good point. But then how do you conveniently view the images? Open the viewer first, then open the file? FYI I changed a .gif to .jpg, and a .jpg to .gif, and i can still double-click view them just fine. The extensions tells it to open with the viewer, the viewer figures out what the file type is by the contents, not the extension, so it seems.

to append the ".jpg" I modified a command in the "function saveimage()" section. Change the line var command = "cp " + escapePath(imageFile) + " " + escapePath(outputDir + "/" + entryName); to var command = "cp " + escapePath(imageFile) + " " + escapePath(outputDir + "/" + entryName + ".jpg"); and now you have ".jpg" at the end of the file name. Again, very nice code. thanks!

So I opened up your gadget in "Widget Converter" so it unzipped the javascript and the .kon file. It was pretty easy reading (nice job) so I simply added "saveImage()" into the function updateImage() as the excerpt below shows. I show this primarily for the benefit of GUS and others that want to save the images automatically. Now I just have to figure out how to append ".jpg" to the saved file name. Thanks again!
function updateImage() { eprint("------updateImage()------"); saveImage();
if (preferences.cyclePref.value != 0) //choose the next image {

Chris Hart: I've just downloaded version 2.5.7 from this page and run it on Mac OS X 10.3.9 anf K 2.1.1 both as a new user and as an old user with existing prefs and I'm getting no errors. Do you get an entry in the Gear menu or any error messages? You could also try removing the pref file at ~/Library/Preferences/Konfabulator/WebImages.widget.plist. Perhaps you could report back via the appropriate forum?

Justin: It turns out to be more complicated. I can replace commas by "%2C" in the primary URL, but that would not work in the search strings, unless I were to replace all commas in any downloaded html pages. I would then have to map it back again before the user saw any extracts.

Harry,
Forgive me for being dense, but couldn't you replace the comma with '%2C' instead of stripping it out when the link is first entered by the user? Seems like it could be a simple fix for the next release. :)

Brett: WebImages uses the comma internally to separate items in the stored preference lists, so commas are currently stripped out by the widget. As it has been like that for over a year, I cannot change the behavior immediately without upsetting the other 28898 users of the widget. It may be possible to change it over a sequence of later releases.
However, you can get what you want by replacing any commas in your URL with "%2C". So "http://ichart.finance.yahoo.com/z?s=BA&t=3m&q=l&l=on&z=m&c=%5ERUT%2C%5EGSPC%2C%5EIXIC%2C%5EDJI&a=v&p=s" works for me.

Doesn't seem to be able to handle URL's with commas such as used in stock graphs at Yahoo. Example: "http://ichart.finance.yahoo.com/z?s=BA&t=3m&q=l&l=on&z=m&c=%5ERUT,%5EGSPC,%5EIXIC,%5EDJI&a=v&p=s" is stored without the commas and thus I cannot get more than one stock/index on the chart.

Also my favorite widget.
I finally found another image I want on my desktop, but I have a feeling the parsing needed to grab the image is beyond this widget's ability. Can anyone figger out how to grab the most recent "Perry Bible Fellowship" (http://cheston.com/pbf/) cartoon? They're listed here: http://cheston.com/pbf/archivelist.html but each image appears on its own page, or in a frame on http://cheston.com/pbf/archive.html.
There's a widget specially for viewing this particular comic, but I prefer the sizing and frame abilities of Web Images.

It works perfect. I wonder if there is possibility to use this somehow in case of java scripts. For example on page http://www.trafficland.com/findacam/trafficvideo.php?uid=0&map=124 there is several cameras on the map on the left, links are javascripts starting image show on the right. Image source of one of them is pointing to http://cam02.trafficland.com/trafficimage.php?system=pub&webid=1011XX&pubtoken=cba206a2b14827e0043fc47f5d1bf035&random=0.XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX first XX in 1011 in that link is specific for the camera, last XXXXXXXXXXX is number of the image that is changing every 5 seconds. I could not get this to work. George

DPK: WebImages is already capable of displaying GIF files. On Windows, the URL has to end in .gif or .GIF. On the Macintosh, it should display any GIF file, whether or not it has the .gif extension.
I've not tried it with a dynamic GIF. Whether that works or not is up to the way Konfabulator is implemented - I have no control over that.

This is a fantastic widget. Way better for showing comics than "Daily Dose" (which is designed for comics). Fantastic, terrific, thank you.
One suggestion: instead of (or in addition to) being able to choose exact height or width of the image, it would be great to be able to optionally set the maximum and minimum height and width, to deal with images that come in at unexpected sizes.

DeScartes: The widget works by fetching images from web servers using HTTP. Webcams feed pictures to a web server which the widget accesses. The only way that the widget could know that an image had changed would be to compare each received image with the previous image (byte by byte).
In principle, this could be done, and there could be a mode in which the widget remained invisible until it detected a change. However, we have no plans to do this at the present time.
WebImages is quite a complicated widget which was not designed with your application in mind. It would probably be much simpler for someone to design a much simpler widget targetted at your application.

I love this widget! Its small, neat, and has great features. I just have a couple of suggestions for features in a new version.
1. A variable update frequency: Have a standard refresh rate, say 5 seconds, but then say if you click down on it, the refresh rate increases to every second (or another rate) until the click is relseased.
2. Ability to load and cycle through a series of images: Many weather satellite images are stored as separate images in a common directory. For instance, et0.gif, et-1.gif, et-2.gif, and so on, counting backward in time. It would be great if there were a way to specify a directory and a range of images (et0.gif to et-24.gif) to cycle through.
Great work guys!

Awesome widget, but the new version 2.4.2 has a resource leak that kills my system. Previous versions did not have this problem. It freezes the desktop and burns 85% CPU on my Athlon XP 2800+, 1.5GB RAM!

The ImageView widget would be better suited to your purpose. The next version will have rotation and an auto-enlarge feature. No frame at present (and probably not going to have one!).

This seems like it could be used as a desktop image pinup widget pretty easily. I was wondering, how hard would it be to add more customizable sizes, to allow rotation, and to make the bottom border of the picture the same as the rest? With those few things, this would be a really cool widget for people who want to pin pictures on their desktop.

Perfect! v239 corrects the issue. Just for testing's sake, I tried running v231 after digging into ~/Library/Application Support/Konfabulator/Widgets/ and removing the files there, as well as removing my old preference file. That did not fix the issue. I turned on logging, and this was the log entry when I clicked on the 'spawn new widget' button: Spawning:Web Images1.kon. But nothing spawned. Good to see that v239 fixes the issue. Let me know if you have any other tests you'd like me to run on 231.

Joey: The latest beta is at http://g7awz.users.btopenworld.com/Beta/WebImages239.zip. I would recommend that you clear out the old prefs as before and also check that any files from WebImages in ~/Library/Application Support/Konfabulator/Widgets/ are removed.
You could also have the ancestor widget log to file (the pdf document tells you how). That might tell us what is going wrong.

Thanks, Harry, but that didn't do the trick. Trashed all preferences for WebImages in ~/Library/Preferences/Konfabulator and relaunched. Default image of Tyne Bridge appears, but clicking on the 'spawn new window' icon does nothing. I occasionally get a brief beachball cursor when I do this, but nothing else happens. Hopefully the next version will cure this. I'm using Konfab v1.8.2 and WebImages 2.3.1.

I've just downloaded 231 and tried it in both zipped and unzipped forms on the Macintosh with K 1.8.2. Both work correctly for me. It may be that your old stored preferences from version 2.1 are not compatible with this version. I suggest you move the widget's .plist files out of the ~/Library/Preferences/Konfabulator folder and try again.
There is a new version 239 which should appear shortly in the Gallery. This handles spawning in a different way.

Great, great, great. Three words to describe this widget. Unfortunately, this new version (my first upgrade since 2.1) breaks the ability to spawn a new window (Mac version, running Konfab 1.8.2). Hope a fix is in the works.

There are new beta versions (235 and 236) which you can find via the 3rd Party Windows Widgets Support Forum. There's also an update awaiting approval in the Gallery update queue. Version 231 has a problem which affects NEW Windows users of Web Images. It occurs because of a fault in the Windows version of Konfabulator.

There is an image of the sliders in the Mac version at http://g7awz.users.btopenworld.com/Konfabulator/sliders.jpg . The Windows and Macintosh versions of Web Images use exactly the same code, so any "cosmetic" differences are due to the behavior of Konfabulator on Windows.

The tick marks mean exactly the same on Windows as on the Macintosh. They indicate times from 5 seconds to 1 hour. Here are the numbers of seconds corresponding to each of the eleven marks:
["5","10","15","30","60","120","300","600","900","1800","3600"];

Hmm, so I might be updating every 5 seconds then. The IT guy should be calling any minute now...
There are 11 tick marks in the Windows slider, so I do not know how that correlates to the time intervals in the Mac version.

Nice Widget.
I have one question that I could not resolve by reading the documentation. In the Widget preferences (Windows, btw), there is no idication of what time interval each has mark represents in the refresh interval. I don't know if I'm updating my image every 5 minutes or 5 seconds...
Thanks!

We should be able to do Proxy Server support on Windows when the description of the new URL object becomes available.
The other request is much harder. Many web servers don't allow access to directory listings, and there is also no guarantee that every file in a directory is something that can be displayed as an image. It might be possible to let the user specify a pattern for a sequence of URLs to be attempted, but this may result in lots of failed requests.

I am new to Konfabulator (and am unfortunately running it on Windows). What a wonderful tool for those of us who are PC-bound (although I do have a MAC at home!)
Your Web Images Widget works well and I appreciate it greatly.
Might I suggest 2 items –?
First is support for a proxy server in Windows.
Second, is to provide a preference choice for the WIW to automatically step through all the images found in a directory on the web, much as the “Picture Frame” widget does for a local directory.

The recently added proxy support does not work on Mac OS X 10.2.8, although it works fine on Mac OS X 10.3.6. Users who have problems with Web Images 2.1.9 should stick with the previous version 2.1.5, until we find a solution.

Web Images uses the Unix curl command to access the Internet. It appears that curl does not make use of the proxy settings defined in the Network Preferences Pane. We could add a preference to Web Images to allow a proxy server to be defined. Users may also be able to define a Unix environment variable to define a proxy server, which curl would then use. The current version does not have proxy server support.

Dan - I've found particular URLs that cause the widget to quit quite quickly. This appears to be due to damaged image formats, which K can't cope with. There's not much I can do about it. The debug version may tell you something - you have to shift+option-click the + button, then open prefs to turn on the debug to file option.

Thanks alot for the modification. Unfortunately, the widget is still quitting form time to time. I was observing the widget now for a while and I am not able to tell you, when it is disappearing. Sometimes it's just away. It's not depending on a particular cam.

Hi Harry,
Great little app... has become a "must-have" in less than a week since I started using... but I also am seeing the same problem of it silently dropping. I haven't actually witnessed the drop, I just happen to glance over and it's gone. I am currently flipping through about 12 webcams, none of which are streaming. I just downloaded your debug version, and I'll run it and report anything I find via the forum.
Thanks again, Dave

Dan - you'll have to provide more detail, if you want me to chase the problem. How many images were you viewing? Were you looking at streaming cams, etc., etc. Did this occur with particular URLs? Please file a full report in the Third Party Widget Support Forum. There is a version of Web Images which logs the debug window of the initial ancestor widget to file at <http://g7awz.users.btopenworld.com/Konfabulator/WebImages.dmg>. This might catch the error.

You'll have to wait until Konfabulator supports streaming. Windows Media Player and RealPlayer are the best that I can do at present. You would also need a 2Mbps internet connection to support the display of four streaming webcams.

If there's ever a way you can figure out how to get a streaming traffic cam in there (the stream (.asx) plays in Windows Media Player on my machine)... I would bow down to thee. All my traffic cams in Sacramento, CA are streaming... How cool would it be to have a matrix of 4 cameras for all the major freeways I travel every day? Answer: WAY Cool!

Would be a much better program if it allowed images of other aspect ratios. I was trying some images from wunderground.com that were square and they were squashed to fit in the standard webcam ratio. Otherwise a great little program.

In the next release, I'll do that for you, probably by overloading the current buttons. Something like; Option-click the wrench to save the current image, Option-click the eyeglass to open the current URL in your browser.
The next release will also be able to deal with (some) variable image URLs.
