Site Status fetches the page you specify and returns green if everything is fine or alerts you to any problems.
Note: if you are upgrading from a previous version of Site Status you will need to reenter your sites. I’m sorry about that, but it is a fix for sites not sorting in alphabetical order by site name.
Click on the site name to expose the action buttons.
|
|
The add button [+] opens a preference dialog box to enter a new site (including the protocol). This can be a site secured with SSL, but you must enter https:// before the URL. There have been issues with SSL sites but I have not been able to replicate the error. This may be an issue with the certificate if any problems are encountered, like mismatched URLs, expired certificates, or unknown certificate authorities.
The edit button [pencil] opens the preference dialog to modify site information you are currently watching.
The delete button [x] removes the site from the list.
Clicking on the colored bubble (green when fine, white for initial errors, and red for problem) will open your default browser linking to the site you are watching.
Right-clicking (control + click for single button Macs) opens the Widget context menu. Select “Widget Preferences” to: set the interval in minutes between the checking of sites; play alert sounds; the volume of the alert sounds; and the number of failed attempts before the status is set to red alert.
Known Issues Upon returning from the preferences the action buttons cannot be activated. The current workaround is to click on another Widget or active program window, then return to Site Status. Version 4.0 New Security Model Compliant Version 2.0 Now “Generic” - New preference: Volume Control. - New preference: Turn alert sounds on or off. - New preference: Indicate number of failed attempts before full alert. - New preference: Timer to control the number of minutes between "pings" of the sites. - Modified it so it wouldn't show the edit and delete icons when it updates. - Modified order of array structure so when array.sort is called it is the title that is sorted rather than the URL as had been happening in earlier versions.
Version 1.1.1 - Fixed false positive results that arose with version 2.1.1 of Konfabulator. - Removed check for html tag of any type, just whether the error message comes back. - Redrawing after each entry is checked rather than after all of the sites have been checked. Version 1.1 By Barry Lemrow - Fixed a few bugs that were causing white status dots to appear which was confusing to first time users. - Added an error count per site. If there are one or more errors for the site, the number of failures is displayed. - Added aiff files that are speaking warning and alert phrases. - if you click on the status bubble it will open the URL in a browser
Version 1.0 - Initial release of my first Widget
Future Enhancements: - Correct problem with the edit buttons not being available after editing an entry. - Have the lights turn from green to yellow when refreshing. -A way to resize the width of the Widget.

Sorry, there's not much new in this version other than a patch for the more modern security model that resulted in this widget being shut down by the management. -Tom

Great widget! It would be so much more useful, though, if it alerted not only when a host fails the ping but also when it begins responding again.
I would also like to set the check interval numerically in seconds. Some people need instant notice if a host goes down.
SMTP support (for emailing alert messages) would be great, too!
Implement those changes and I'll pay for it!

Version 2.0 is in the update queue. It is generic now so there is only one download. A number of your requests have been implemented: timer rate, volume, etc.

Thanks Tonya, that suggestion is on the to-do list. Kary, I'm also on 10.3.9 and I'm able to click on the dot and have the browser open I don't know why you can't.

This widget is just what I was looking for—best of the bunch so far, at least. I think it'd be nice to be able to change how often we'd like it to check the sites, though. Two minutes may be a bit much unless you need a pronto warning, so the more bandwidth-conserving types may want to set their own intervals.

I like the premise of this widget very much. It checks my sites like it should but I cannot press the "green" buttons to launch the site like the manual says it should do. My question: Is it supposed to launch the site or not? I'm using MacOS X 10.3.9.
Thanks and God bless.

I just tested Engine 3.0.2.79 and the problem I had earlier today seems cleared up, but there were still some nagging issues with the edit button not showing up until the next pass. I'll look into it and post anything I might find or a fix if one can be had.

Thanks Chris, I'll see what I can do.
I've installed the latest engine (version 3.0.1.77 --Windows) and I'm getting some interesting reactions. I'll see if this is due to an error in the new version or if it is due to the fact one of the sites I'm watching is hosed.

This is a real handy little app.
I made a couple small changes. I modified it so it wouldn't show the edit and delete icons when it updates as roberttco suggested. I also changed the refresh time to 5mins because one min just seemed a little excessive.
Suggestions: -roberttco's mods -Refresh time as a menu item -Have the lights turn from green to yellow when refreshing.
A great widget!

Sorry for any delay. You shouldn't have any problem with SSL by entering https:// as your protocol in the URL field. I have a few sites that I monitor that way. Is there any error you are getting? What indication do you have that it is failing to work?

Thanks to both Kruser and Monolith for your kind words. Kruser, the false positive may have to do with Konfabulator 2.1 (per my earlier post). If you would like to go over further development efforts and hitting interactive web sites, please email me: twrleblanc at yahoo dot com.

This widget is great! As soon as I learned what widgets/konfabulator(today) was I searched for something which would check website status and this did the trick. I'm getting a false positive for a known webserver that's shut off and wondering if the check is just a ping. Also, I'd like to make it interpret an interactive site which requires login (as that's my eventual goal). I'd be interested in assisting develop this tool rather than build something from scratch. For now I'm off to look for this .kon file referenced above. Thanks!

I would really like to see an option to organize the servers/sites you are monitoring. I added mine in order of ip, but they got listed all jumbeled. And a way to resize the width of the widget as my names only occupy 30% of the available space.

Very nice widget! I have to ask (and maybe this is just not possible) I have several sites that are only SSL sites. It seems that it always sees them as down. Also, would be nice to have a history and maybe just flag a site when at sometime during the history it had a consistent down time. Then just clear the flag until next occurrence. Thanks again.

Sweet tool, keep up the good work! :D I agree with Patrick Arkley; based on a hostname and portnumber it would be nice to be able to monitor other services beside HTTPd's. Also a variable to how often it should check the service/server. Maybe a threshold for "allowed" misses. (Widget freaked out while I was trying to figure out why my site wasnt responding, giving me a feedback every minute)

Thanks for your comments Patrick,
My initial thoughts for this Widget were to check the HTTP status code and respond accordingly, but one is limited by the object in Konfabulator only returning the response from the site (i.e. the page). Version 1.1 improved on my initial concept of checking for the HTML starting tag to also accept any file returned as valid. So, you should get a positive response if something is returned. I will have to test this when using FTP to confirm.
The whole purpose of this Widget is to see if your Web site is up and running. Due to the stateless nature of the Web the Widget must continually request the target file to see if it is still there. Unfortunately this means that any counter that only displays requests for a given page rather than unique user sessions will increment. Counters that count unique user sessions (like your reporting tool probably is) should only indicate the initial request from SiteStatus. If a session’s life span is 24 hours then

Since you check for index.html or default.asp (maybe others as well) I can't monitor FTP-sites or other with this tool I can only check websites on any port. One huge problem that I just discovered is that this tool checkes the sites every minute which creates a hit on my counters every minute. I have left my work PC on 24/7 this week creating a couple of thousand additional hits.
I can't recommend this tool unless you don't have a counter or if you want tremendous amount of hits. My tracking tool didn't indicate these hits though.
My suggestion is a tool that probes any port (user specifying) on any URL/IP (user specifying) and based on response or not it will indicate if it is active or not.

I could very well be wrong, but you should be able to specify the port in the URL you type as a preference for a site.

I modified the source to eliminate the flashing edit/delete icons at each refresh if you would like to add that modification. I simply changed the creation time opacity to 0 from 255. I also changed the onGetFocus to onMouseDown since I found in a couple cases on my system, the edit/delete icons would show up for no reason.

I reall like this widget, it looks good, and it doesn't take up too much space either. However, I do not like the audio feedback it gives, because to be honest, it always makes me jump! Is there any way I can turn this off and just have the colored dots as the indicator of the site status?

Sites requiring Windows authentication may cause the Widget to become non responsive. If you wait long enough the Widget will respond to your request. I’m looking into the problem, but I have not been able to replicate it on my machine.

No. You will also need to edit the Site Status.kon file and in the getSiteStatus function change the second if statement to read }
else if (siteResponse.search("<HTML>") != -1) {
This will get rid of the white dots for sites that return valid HTML pages.
After making this change the only time you should see a white dot is if the site's HTML page does not contain either a <HTML> or <html>.
Sorry for not making this more clear in my earlier post.

The white dots are due to the urls not having a <html> or <HTM> (which should be changed to <HTML>) in the return buffer. In my case I'm pinging a site that returns just text. I modified to the code to give a green status for what I was looking for. Works great for me. I'm monitoring almost 20 sites. I would like to talk with the developer about enhancements.
