Desk Calendar
Ricky Romero

This 'lil fella will tell you the date and scale to whatever size you want him to be. His header will change to whatever color you please and he can display the current date in 30 languages!

I made the Widget because I always forget what day it is. It's really helped me out!

3.0
Rewritten for Yahoo! Widgets 4
The current day name is finally displayed
New, higher resolution graphics
Much smaller file size thanks to text rotation
Better integrated with Konfabulator's localization capabilities
Uses virtually no CPU
The current date is displayed in the Dock

2.0
Adds Croatian, Czech, Icelandic, Indonesian, Turkish, and Slovenian month translations, and takes advantage of Konfabulator 2 enhancements, resulting in less bloat and more features.
Adds the ability to open your preferred calendar application by double-clicking on the Widget.

1.6.1
Addresses a bug where day and month names would become distorted.

1.6
Added Catalan, Finnish, Greek, Irish, Korean, Latin, and Portuguese month translations.
Added an update check which can be turned off in the preferences.

1.5
Added Arabic, Danish, Dutch, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Mandarin Chinese, Norwegian, Polish, Russian, Spanish and Swedish month translations.
Added Aqua, Graphite, Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, Blue, Violet, Brown, Black and Pink header colors.

1.0

Licotto: I apologize. The new version uses Yahoo! Widgets' text rotation capabilities, so the appearance of the text is entirely reliant on how well the engine renders it. On Windows, it looks fine, but on OS X, it's a gigantic eyesore.

If it's any consolation, there is a bug filed, so the issue will be addressed at some point.

Is this the same as the older versions from more the Konfabulator era? This version is VERY pixelated and choppy - and the scaling isn't very smooth either.

I am actually disappointed at how this looks now. I will continue to use my old one that cannot change colors.

Any news on the bug of the date not being updated coming back from hibernation? I'm still experiencing that all the time with the 3.0 version, and it can be quite confusing some times.. :( (Then again, I'm having the same problem with Dashboard Weather, so it might be related to the widget engine?)

Thank you, Ricky, - your widget is just what I needed.
Please consider adding new language - Ukrainian. And a possibility to show month/day in two different languages simultaneously. That would be great for those who learn a new language and for those who frequently misspell.
Thank you!

i've loved this widget, and i just updated to the new version (mac), but i find the text is all jagged as opposed to the smooth, anti-aliased older version. :(

Nice but it does not update the date and day of week. I closed my notebook on Friday, opened it on Monday, and it is still Friday -- not bad if that means I have another weekend ahead of me ;-)

I agree with phalougher.
I prefer the old graphics and the month as abreviated capitals (JUN instead of June).
I also prefer the font used on version 2.

A great widget but I'm sticking to version 2 for the moment.

I seem to be having a windoze problem w/ the widget. If I set to keep on top of all other windows, I can't move it in heads up display. In heads up, when I click it, it goes behind the heads up gray background. I nuked the registry entries and was able to reposition it. But I'd like to revert back to v2. Like a bonehead, I nuked my v2 .widget. Is there a place I could download it? My only complaint about v2 is that it wouldn't refresh its date if I were to close my laptop overnight. But that's a minor issue.

Fantastic widget!

Can't seem to reposition the calendar.
It worked on previous builds.
Tried every level widget will not move.

Is there a glitch?

Thanks for the new widget, Ricky. I see you responded to all the people who wanted the day name to show in Desk Calendar. I think I'm going back to version 2, though, because I liked it just the way it was. I also see now that the smallest possible display size, 20 percent, shows the calendar as much larger than it used to be.

I know you can't please all of the people all of the time, and the day name was something that many people obviously wanted. Maybe for version 4 you can add a "use classic display" option that reverts the calendar back to just showing the month abbreviation and date.

The Select a Calendar option doesn't support parameters.

It will run:
C:Program FilesMicrosoft OfficeOffice12OUTLOOK.EXE

but it will not run:
C:Program FilesMicrosoft OfficeOffice12OUTLOOK.EXE /recycle

Major bummer because with startup parameters you could jump right to the calendar in Outlook.

Rick - Thanks for the quick response. I believe your thinking on this problem is correct. This mofning (June 22) when I press the space bar to awaken the OS from Standby mode, the desktop is displayed very quickly, and the Desk Calendar still shows, June 21. Then in a few seconds, the info section of the task bar says something like: You are now connected to the LAN. So it appears the widget is checking the date before the LAN the OS is connected to the LAN.

I think I can test that by quickly checking the date - according to the OS - before I get the "connected to the LAN" message.

So it looks like when XP comes out of standby, the widget needs to wait - say 30 seconds - before it checks for the date. I don't believe this was a problem for MS 2000 pro since the OS never let go of the LAN during standby.

I love the Desk Calendar, but need to disable it for now since, well, I just might just end up going to work on Saturday.

George - The Widget should be updating the date immediately when the machine is awaken from sleep. This has been an intermittent issue that I've seen but haven't had a fix for it so far.

Now that I think about it, though, there may be one. If my thinking is correct, the machine may not be updating the current time until a few moments after it's woken up, which would mean that the Widget is getting the old date before the system updates. That's the best I can come up with. If I ever get around to finishing up the new version, I'll make sure to put in an experimental fix.

If the fix doesn't work, then the bug is in the Widget Engine.

This widget exits with a message saying "can't open Desk Calendar" if you don't have an Internet connection when you start the Widget Engine. Why? It can't look to the computer's system date and open and then check for the Internet date later? Seems uneccessary to exit. To reopen it, you have to dig into the My Widgets folder, double-click it, yada, yada.

Useful and attractive. I forget the date, but I also forget the day, so I'd like to see that added please.
I particularly like being able to call Palm Desktop and not just evil Outlook or undeveloped Sunbird.
And this is a trivial thing, but I'd like to be able to slant the calendar page in either direction, so that I can position it on either edge of the screen (I can't get it flush with the analogue clock on the right-hand side of the screen).

It sounds like we have a problem in common (forgeting dates) :-).

One thing I would like to see there - the day of the week to optionally shown as a 2-3 letter abbreviation.

Absolutely kon-fabulous! Neat and authentic!
If I could have an X-mas wishlist though:
High time thete was a widget that had an active calendar/diary (i.e. w/out ref to Outlook etc.) This one seems a perfect candidate. Make the header larger with current and next month tables legible and ACTIVE: click on day, have the pad flip to that day, and scribble a basic appointment; then see dates with entries highlighted in calendar table. JUST LIKE THE REAL THING BUT MORE! :)
Well, guess it's too much to ask. Maybe will get round to doing it myself one day.

I tried to run the Desk Calendar on the new Mac OS X (10.4.1) which is the initial install.
After installing the Konfabulator 2, and I ran the Desk Carendar. But it does not work properly, that is, by moving the cursor on to desk calendar, the cursor shows waiting (rotating cursor) state.
I checked the crash.log and it shows;

Exception: EXC_BAD_ACCESS (0x0001)
Codes: KERN_PROTECTION_FAILURE (0x0002) at 0x00000000

There must be some error, but I can not understand.

Cool, all three of those localizations have been integrated into 2.0. :-)

Desk Calendar 2 will be released alongside the next release of Konfab, and I think it's going to have some features that you all are going to dig. :-D

Nice widget but it could be improved by allowing a user to click on the date and open Apples iCal.

Maybe instead of a reminder function just opening iCal when doubleclicked?

Oh, one idea: maybe a selector pref so that you can open whatever calendar app you use (iCal, Sunbird, Outlook, etc.) from the widget itself.

Just a thought.

I'd like to include Hebrew as a chioce, but I don't know Hebrew, nor do I have any translators submitting Hebrew translations.

And it doesn't really speak... I was trying to personify it a bit.

I spent some time clicking on the tiny month calendar graphics in the blue strip before realising that they were just decoration and not functional. Until a month calendar can be shown, I think I'll stick with Arlo's Calendar, which currently does more (even though it doesn't offer Saturday or Friday as start-of-week dates).

A due date reminder for bills for example will be nice. It will help a lot those who forgot to pay thier bill. :)

Spanish

And I haven't even checked my email yet today! Doing pretty good for only having it out one full day, hunh? Seeing it in Japanese or Korean would be cool too. :-)

Color choices will be in the next release in a big way after multilingual support.
