so cool... works great... any tech or fan of the movie needs this (yes, you NEED it)

Gee, I wonder where you got the idea for making this Widget...

Excellent work as always!

grablampe - February 16, 2007
Oh I love this film and I don`t know how often I`ve seen this film already. This film is probably evenly that cult like the film "War Games".
The best is: "...Will I dream??..."
Many thanks for this widget and you may have time to make one for "Was Games" too?

5 Stars if i could!

%nickname% - January 31, 2007
You need to make a HAL 9000 Say It! Widget... So you type something in and it speaks what you typed.

Steve - October 1, 2006
I like your widget!! can you add more sayings........please

Greyson - April 23, 2006
This is great. I actually have a HAL 9000 theme on my computer, and had a wallpaper with HAL on it. Now, I was able to replace that wallpaper with this much better version of HAL with added sayings. I only have two suggestions for you if you update it. First, I would increase the time span in between sayings. Secondly, I would have an option to resize it, since I really wish it could be bigger so it would fit in better with my theme.Otherwise though, it's great.

fifi - April 15, 2006
my hal only says one thing when prompted...he is as silent as the grave unless i nag him to talk - just like being married really.

Ellory - April 10, 2006
Martin, regarding your question....did you download the widgets engine? Without it, your computer doesn't know how to run the file. Hope this helps.

Jaaacopo - March 31, 2006
Wonderful idea ... Work on it !

TheDude - March 4, 2006
C'mon guys you call yourself techno geeks...

This is prety simple stuff. I downloaded it and deduced it could only be 1 of 2 file types:
either .exe or .Zip

next time pay attention in class fellas

gwstuser - February 27, 2006
If you like this, you would just LOVE this: www.bubble-softwares.com/hal9000

It's an easier to download software .exe

Martin - February 25, 2006
Every time I download a wigets it doesn't work? How come? It just says "Unkwown FileFormat".

Foca - February 15, 2006
It is great!!!
but It does not play any sound, It happened to me with other widgets, but some others sounds ok... any idea???

Dave - February 14, 2006
Another Dave here, I agree, I'd like to see the ability to add your own sounds, and the ability to turn the sound off. Maybe envoke a double click to make him speak.

richard - January 24, 2006
Hal is my best friend, even thou he is a bit non compiant. it would be nice if he had an expanded dialog.

Dave - December 5, 2005
Can you modify it to have added sounds...Cause I want it to say Dave related quotes (my name is dave) :)

Antti Leppänen - November 9, 2005

It doesn't sing "Bicycle Built for Two"....

DeKemp - July 28, 2005
Nice!!.
Just encounter Konfabulator, installed it and taken this widget.
Nice. Enhancements ? The 'real' thing would answer back when adressed, question- answer would be nice but maybe too much, making him speak when clicked would be ok

WOW, my last comment got cut>

That's the other part:

...The drawback of this method is that each time you open HAL9000's preferences the time (therefore, the string in the pref file) will be changed to 120 seconds. So you'll have to repeat the steps or simply don't open HAL's preferences window.

And if HAL doesn't speak it may be that he is set to be in "Konspose Only" Window Level mode. To speak, HAL needs to be visible, so it is best to set him to "Desktop" mode, I guess.

Cheers,
Ignacy

Ignacy - May 31, 2005
Great idea and great widget! Love it! Now someone should make a "Solaris" widget as well.

For all those that want HAL to speak less frequently:
On MAC:
1. Close Hal9000 Widget
2. Locate the file named HAL9000.widget.plist, it should be in your Home Directory > Library > Preferences > Konfabulator
3. Open the file in TextEdit
4. Locate the line: <key>Pref-silenceDuration</key>
5. The next one will be something like <string>120</string>
6. Now edit the number between the <string> tags according to your preferences e.g. make it look like <string>3600</string>, if you want HAL9000 to speak every two hours or 3600 seconds.
7. Save the file and quit TextEdit.
8. Open the HAL9000.widget and hopefully HAL becomes less talkative ;-)

ON PC:
Probably something similar, just open the Registry Editor (Be careful, not to mess something up. If you don't now how, then don't do it.) and find the appropriate keys.

The drawback of this method is that each time you open HAL9000's

Colin - May 24, 2005
If youre using windows, rename it zip and unzip it. you can modify it yourself to suit your needs. Im still looking through it, but im sure theres a way to make him speak less frequently, and if you look in the resources folder, you can see where the audio is stored, and if you look in the .js file you can add the name of the sounds to the array. have fun!

nice widget by the way!

Captian Green Jeans - May 8, 2005
Love the widgit! Works great but lost the red color. It's just black now. Any Ideas on how to fix?

xiao kai - May 8, 2005
i dont understand how to use this? what does it do

V1k1ng - March 29, 2005
This is the happiest day of my computer geek life!

Katana - March 15, 2005
Love this widget... needs a longer time scale.. ~15 min... any way to add the other bits of HAL dialog from 2K1? Great work....

Region Philbis - March 8, 2005
waited a couple minutes -- nothing... how often does HAL speak?

Ezra Corpse - March 7, 2005
My favorite Widget!!! I love having HAL speak to me. I would like to suggest a couple of modifications. 1. There needs to be a much longer timespan between messages. 2. There are lots of other good bits from HAL like, "There is a message for you." Perhaps you could allow the users to add WAVs or have the Widget point to a folder with the WAVs and play them randomly. Other than that. Superb Widget.

Victor - March 6, 2005
Would it be possible to link it to the built in Mac Spoken Interface?

CDavey - March 5, 2005
Volumn seems to be an issue with most widgets, what module are they on in the sound controller?

george - March 3, 2005
my wont talk

CDavey - March 3, 2005
I'd love to see an option to add any name. My name is Dave and I'd like to have the sound file with the name left in, is it possible to get that?

dman - February 22, 2005
great idea, but:

1. need to lenghten the silence time
2. he doesn't light up red when speaks
3. needs a volume button
3. great to add "the time is" "the date is" "reminder notes" via wav file

Galatrox - February 19, 2005
Ah, two stars was to weak, want a three so ill throw in a four to compensate my previos two.

Also, I think the time in between should be so much longer. It 's fun if you'll hear his voice once or twice per day, then you wouldn't be tired of it so soon. I'm starting already, after 5 min. I think the slider should be at least minutes or in ten min intervals - I would at least be able to go up to something like 120minutes or more.

Galatrox - February 19, 2005
So happily obsolete!
Volume control is a must have.

Bigger span of when HAL speaks, and maybe even a ranomness slider.

Galatrox - February 19, 2005
Ok, I see your point "????" (thouroghly annoying name), but you could just have noticed it in a more pleasant way, as a tip/suggestion rather.

As I see it, had I done this widget, I would never have asked if you'd not brought up the issue. Still I'm not sure. I'm afraid they'll turn it down if it's done, and if there's no lawsuit threatening I would leave it as is. (Though, I think this kind of widget is for WB's profit, as it adds to its culture status and number of fans; and if they realise that, a note of copyright wouldn't be hard to fix.)

Pranella - February 16, 2005
I love it! Could you add more sentences! It's my favourite!!!!!!!!

PhastPhrog - February 16, 2005
Cute. A verison number in the 'About HAL9000' dialogue would be handy. Also a longer delay (ideally with an element of randomness in it) for the time between HAL speaking would be nice.

Daniel Grenell - February 16, 2005
fixed the bug where it closes on its own. i hadn't realized i'd been running 1.8.1 all this time. now it doesn't happen under 1.8.2.

the effect that it was their IPR and not mine etc - which is simple enough to do)

suggesting a way around the potential IPR minefield. The companies are now just starting to focus more on small audio clips etc due to their use as ringtones, and the potential there for exploitation of existing Intellectual Property (aka money for old rope) is huge. Why run the risk when there's such a simple work-around. Hey it could come with some sample sounds of someone imitating HAL with a funny voice - That would be parody an therefore protected under US law (the ejse.com domain is registered in Tampa Florida, and the server is hosted in Chicago?). In fact I think I'd prefer a comedy voice (or choice of voices) - Just think about a "Gangsta", "Hilbilly", or "West Country Yokel" version of HAL. Are there any talented vocal artists that would like to submit some recordings to ejse for inclusion?

I personally had to ask a company for their permission to use some of the IPR in a widget I created - They gave permission within 48hrs (Insisting that I added a note to

??? - February 15, 2005
Just Google for :

"warner brothers" "cease and desist"

and see what you get with that simple query. The big media conglomerates are very picky when it comes to their IPR. I'd hate for one of them to come over "all heavy" on the gallery and cause pixoria to stop supporting it.

We're not talking about one small individual clip here. The solution of not including the clips themselves, but letting the users get their own (Which isn't exactly difficult!) I thought was simple enough to implement and would remove the problem.

The size of the market is irrelevant. It could be argued that the more "niche" a market is, the more valuable it is as there isn't much space for competition.

The "not for financial gain" is also irrelevant. This is especially pertinant as the widget creator is listed as being "ejse.com", and not Edward J. Stembler - It's a blatant form of advertising for the site and the services that can be provided. I'm not saying that that makes it bad - just

Daniel Grenell - February 15, 2005
honestly i don't think WB is really going to get pissed off that someone made a widget (a niche market) and distributed it without financial gain. it's ridiculous to assume that WB would give half a damn.

an aside, it will only stay open for me for a few minutes and then mysteriously closes on its own.

mild7 - February 15, 2005
Cool. It would be super if you had a slider to scale HAL (I'd like him smaller) and also could choose to make him silent and/or increase the wait time between speech to hours. I'd like to leave him on my desktop but his constant yammering is a bit much! Thanks.

???? - February 15, 2005
as an aside, I would love to use this widget. I do think it looks cool. Perhaps a solution would be to have the user specify a folder where it picks random sound files from. The user could then individually be responsible for obtaining any recordings for their own use. The same functionality would be there.

???? - February 15, 2005
If the copyright owners (I guess it's Warner Brothers now, but you'd have to check) don't mind, then they can give permission (if asked). It is very important that copyright issues are observed here. If Widget developers want their copyright acknowledged - they should observe the same. ejse.com do state in the javascript file "This software is freeware; distribute as a whole freely. Do not re-distribute individual resources or units separately." - But they are distributing wav files that the do not attribute to the copyright holder - I do have to admit to making the assumption that permission hasn't been granted based on this.

Homer - February 14, 2005
I seriously doubt that the current owners of the copyrights to the Space Odyssey (sp?) series will mind a little widget named after their computer.

newmac - February 14, 2005
Love the effect; great for background ambiance....now the next step is to give it some intelligence...the sequel should say, "just a reminder, its tuesday", or "good morning user, looks like you are doing great work today." Maybe tie it into the database somehow and have it start reminding you of appointments. The ultimate will be when you can ask it things like "how is my stock doing", and it checks the internet and responds, "certainly, its up 2 points, etc...

Flërnk - February 14, 2005
This works perfectly with my iPulse HAL 9000! Now my iPulse speaks!!! I laughed out loud.

Galatrox - February 14, 2005
Could you expand that "????" ?

???? - February 13, 2005
I though widgets were checked for blatent copyright infringement before they were accepted into the gallery?

Daniel Grenell - February 13, 2005
FINALLY!
