my bad. i dunno how i did it but i brought down the CPU use to ~6%. hmmm... must've been something else.

to the rest of you downloading this, try opening Task Manager and see which app flexes your CPU.

suggestions:d
1. ability to zoom to an area, choose center
2. select earthquakes, get basic earthquake information

Mayday!!!
Can someone help me, please???
I changed the page for dowloding the earthquake-infos. Now I can't start the Tremorskimmer, cause he isn't able to read the infos from the new side. And I can't change the url, to the original side, cause he didn't start.
I deleted all files from the Tremorskimmer and added him complete new, but the Widget Engine allways says: Tremorskimmer can not be started.
What can I do?
Sorry - for my bad english, I'm from Germany.
I like this widget very much and don't want to miss him.

Nate...As I mentioned before this is an awesome widget, but it tasks the CPU like crazy. I turned off the animation and scrolling text and that worked pretty good. I downloaded the widget again, but same problem, then when I went to turn off animation again, the preferences said it was off! So now I cannot turn it off, is there a preference file I cn trash as well? Using a PC

It's a nice widget especially for the beginnings of it. But I don't hear any noise when the threshold for magnitude is reached. I'd also like to be able to take away the text list of areas and just have the map and upper bar. Also noticed CPU usage was slightly high as well with animations used.

Love this widget, but my computer does not. I have noticed my CPU cycles spiking constantly. I weeded out all my widgets to find that tremor skimmer is the culprit. I turned off animations and scrolling and it brought the cpu load down considerably.

Preferences have an option for "audio" alert but for some reason I am not getting any audio alert even when magnatude threshold exceeded. I also don't get alarm with some alarm clocks but do get alarm or audio alerts with some other widgets. XP sp1 used. Am I missing maybe the sound file that is being used? Otherwise seems to work ok and great widget. Oh, I do have to turn if off when using google earth as it bleeds thru when set to normal window but not a big problem for me.

Would be nice if the events were selectable and the crosshairs moved to the locale of that event.

Doesn't work on Windows 2000. I have the same problem as others below. CPU goes to 100% at the disclaimer which I can't click as the cursor becomes an hourglass. Have to kill Konfabulator to regain control of the PC. Screenshots look nice though. Wish I could try it.

Great Widget! Love it. It works perfectly at home on Windows XP but hangs at work at the disclaimer on Windows 2000. Any fixes?

I love this widget and it does exactly what it says it supposed to do(windows platform, athlon 2400+, 796MB ram).

I was wondering if there is a possiblity of a cousin to this widget that tracks weather phonomena (Tornadoes, Hurricanes, Typhhons et al).

Is there any chance this widget is doing something...funny? I have a lot of security enabled on my system, and never had a problem with any other widget, but my security system pops up danger flags and will not allow this widget to run unless I specifically soften my armor, which I will not do for a silly widget. Those reports of large cpu hits make me nervous...

I read you do development on Mac, but a really neat feature would be to use the earthquake coordinates, and add an ability to launch Google Earth with those coordinates (which is relatively easy), or to be cross-platform at least an online mapping site.

Nate, I have the same symptoms as Daniel. Disclaimer only and 100% CPU (I am also running Windows 2000.)

I cant run it! I open it up, I see the disclaimer, and then my cpu jumps to 100% and it won't do anything else. I can't even click on it because my cursor turns to the hourglass when I move the mouse over it. What can I do?

I'm running Windows 2000.

VERY nice widget! Some things I'd like to see:

1. Time able to be changed to local time (think this was posted already)

2. Able to click on an earthquake location on the map and have the "Recent Events" text area scroll to that event.

3. Maybe have the animated line graphic be integrated behind the title so that the widget can be square instead of having a piece of the UI sticking out the side.

I can't seem to get this Widget to work under 2.0 or 2.0.1. Everytime I start it, it hangs at the "Continue & Agree" screen (hourglass while my mouse is over the widget, and Konfabulator's CPU usage goes to 99%). I'm using Win2K, and not having any problems with other widgets.

Living in San Francisco, I'd love to see this working!

Helps me to keep track of world events and the increase of seimic activity both on my work G5 and at home iMac.

Appreciate the work that went into this. No complaints.

Neat. However, I'm much more interested in regional data, e.g. http://quake.wr.usgs.gov/ (see http://earthquake.usgs.gov/regional/ for more)

Any chance of such configurability? How do I go about finding out if the regional site has the data feed I need?

You'll note that if you turn text scrolling off also the cpu usage will drop dramatically. If you want the bling-bling you have to pay the performance hit man. And that's just konfabulators inbuilt functions.

There is a 1.1 in the works though that should fix a few issues that people have pointed out.

This is a really nice widget, graphically and the idea. The only complaint I have at all is the fact that it seems to use a bit more resources than it probably should. With the map up and animation on it uses around 50% of my cpu, with the animation off and the map minimized it bounces around 7-14%. Still a little much of you ask me. But overall a very nice job. Maybe the code can be reworked to allow for less cpu usage?

thanks for the info, Ozzpot, didn't notice that preference glitch.

Ozzpot - April 13, 2005
Okay, to be more specific about my comments below, the map appears in error afer preferences have been invoked. Also, you should clean up the shadow during the slide transition between states. It should ideally be turned off as the first action, i.e:

function changeState() {
if (preferences.state.value=="Maximized")
mainWindow.shadow = 0;
map.opacity=0;
largeBackground.slide("up", 200, 5);
mainWindow.shadow = 1;
} else {

etc... (I don't know what you've called your images, you know what I mean)

This would alleviate the minor graphical glitch of the OS temporarily leaving an artifact of the Aqua shadow behind druring the slide state.

This is really great. Works absolutely fine for me. The only glitches I have found is once or twice the map has appeared while the Widget is minimized. Might wanna clean up the slide / state function or whetever you've done there. (I haven't looked at the code)

Try as i might i can't reproduce this problem under normal circumstances, my main development platform is mac so that's mainly where i tested it, but i did run it on windows without a problem. Are you guys using a 14k dial-up or something? The only way i can get it to lock on a windows box is if i disable my network card?

I get the disclaimer screen but can't click on accept (and it takes 100% cpu usage while sitting there too, heh)
Looks like it might be good tho...

Is anyone else having the CPU hit issue? When i check it it uses around 05-06% of the cpu with the animations on, and if you turn them off in the preferences it varies between 00 and 02% depending if you're hovering over it or not. Also thanks for the suggestions, all are welcome.

I am a seismology student at New Mexico Tech. I use the NEIC website all the time and it is a pain to refresh all the time. This app is amazing. I was wondering however if you could add clickable links to the earthquakes shown under the map so that I can click directly to more info about each.

Very, very slick. :-)

Smart of you to put that disclaimer when the Widget is launched, too.
