Accent
Martin Koistinen

A handy Widget for users of multiple languages. The Widget provides instant access to otherwise difficult to type characters in convenient groups of 12 languages. Simply click on the desired symbol and it is instantly available in your clipboard, ready to be pasted into your current document or application. The Widget is highly customizable and available in multiple sizes and orientations. Also, check out the tooltips!

Initial release. Supports special symbols, punctuation marks and currencies for the languages: Danish, Dutch, English, Finnish, French, German, Italian, Norwegian, Portuguese, Spanish and Swedish.

Release 1.1.0 adds support for Gaeilge (Irish) adds some new tile colors and fixes a typo in one tooltip and is now correctly version 1.1.0 s the About Box already showed!

Release 1.2.0 takes full advantage of Konfabulator 2! (K2 is required for this release). Now, you can select any color you like for the tiles AND the symbols, there is easy access to frequently used preferences in a contextual menu and re-organised the real preference window nicely into panes. Add, after all of this, the widget has a smaller files size and memory footprint!

Comments for Accent

metin_se7en - May 4, 2007
Great tool! I use it a lot.

I agree with M.D. Prins that the default should be lower case. Also: editing your own saveable custom character set with any character from the current clipboard would be super.

Thanks!

A very useful widget. One thing though that is not useful at the moment - at least if you use the Dutch (Nederlands) symbols - is that per default capital/uppercase characters are displayed, while lowercase is what you want in 95% of all cases... Actually, you hardly ever need accents on capitals, because in common written language you should only use them on lowercase letters. So please, make the default lowercase! Thanks a lot in advance.

Great widget, but:
1. Languages - Turkish, Icelandic, etc.
2. Possibility to hide some letters, or the currency symbol.
3. Possibility to make small and capital letters without needing to switch (show ÄÖÜßäöü) for German, for instance...

Well very very usefull widget.

But it would be usefull I think to :
- be able to display more than one langage accents ( I use frequently as well french as german during my PC work, and surely others iuse other language combinations)
- add common maths ( +/_, += etc- and symbols bars ( arrows, man/woman symbols, copyright, registered etc) ?

That would be a fantastic tool, and "a priori" not too much work to implement I imagine

Hope it comes to it

Until now this is the sole widget I wouldn't like to live without !

Regards,

Pivert

By far my favorite and most practical widget. I do, however, have one suggestion. I am writing a paper on Japanese history right now and would love to have some curial characters for pronunciation available, like "ō." It falls under "Latin" characters in the Windows XP character map. Perhaps you could just add the language "Latin" as an option.

Ops... It is missing an important one in Portuguese: acute E (Alt+ 0201/0233). It would be interesting if possible to personalize characters to display.
I would emphasize the comments of Fernando on July 10, 2005.

I would give 5 Stars!!!!! Another example that simple is beauty. I am Brazilian and the Portuguese (from "Portugal") works great. In the past, I always have to switch the keyboard, type crazy combination keys, or forget it at all, for just some few accents. Now, it comes a simple and neat solution.
At first, I didn't know how to use it... Sure, not reading the instructions... :P
After having that "clipboard" feature clarified, it is a cleaver idea to have any available accent to be transferred to any application.
Congrats!

If you are still accepting new language requests, I would love it you could add Polish. This is super useful.

Hi there,

I would love to see the "É" and "é" character added to the portuguese language. Or, maybe you could create a "Brazilian" portuguese language for Accent.

Thanks!

It's easy to understand how great this widget is, even before you download it!
Very useful for a student like me, studying a lot of modern languages - it gets rid of the need for the clumsy "Insert>Symbol" tool in Microsoft Office.
I particularly like the ability to resize and recolour the tiles.
A must for anyone who regularly types in other languages.

continuum2, I agree, it would be best if once you click a symbol, it just appears as the next character in your top-most application, but, I don't think K! can do that, sorry. If anyone knows a way, I'd be happy to try it!

Also, This widget's mission statement is to assist those in writing foreign languages that use "the standard" charater set -- your beloved 'TM' is not part of this mission, sorry.

continuum2 - May 21, 2005
Would be even better if you could actualy realy "type" the chars. in a text and not have to "copy and paste" them.
Also where is my all beloved TM symbol ?!

Great widget but can be improved.

Great widget, will sure help with my French. I also take Latin and it be great to have latin long marks, but as already stated you can't really do it, o well On top of that you can always putin my native language, Lithuanian and I'd be happy to help with that when I have time, but that is short.

Sorry all, turns out that Latin Long Marks are *not* part of the standard "western" character set, but rather part of Unicode or special/local character sets. This means that even if I added it, it will likely not produce the desired results as the your applications will interpret the clipboard contents differently. Therefore, I will not add Latin Long Marks, sorry!

One more thought: how about a separate version for all the dead languages? (No offense-- I took Latin, too.) I don't really want to devote memory space to ancient Greek, Sanskrit, or Latin on a daily basis.

Thanks for the note about adding Latin to the next release and under the Vatican flag no less. I, too, study Latin and wanted to let you know there's another vote for adding it.

Veasey, I think I can add "Latin Long Marks" in the next release, I will use the Vatican flag since that is the only "country" that uses it to my knowledge.

Tag, can you contact me directly via the PIM fnction in the K! forums? I am <a ref="http://www2.konfabulator.com/forums/index.php?showuser=3989">MKoistinen</a> in the directory.

Caegan, sorry, this is for Latin-based languages.

Daniela, thanks for the kind words and I'll be sure to add more colors, including pink, in the next release!

Tag, I'd be happy to add 'Irish', I presume this would really be Gaelic? I'll research it for the next release, in the meantime, use Español and ignore the 'ñ', '¿' and '¡'. :)

Ricky, yeah, cool thing is, this widget helps you learn the keyboard short-cuts, but still be there for you when you can't recall the obscure ones.

All, please feel free to suggest more languages, but please do not be offended if I haven't added yours! I would like this to be very complete so I would love to hear which Latin-based languages I can add.

Forgot to comment on this one. :-)

This is going to be really handy for the mere mortals that don't know all the keyboard shortcuts for these keys (or are too lazy to use them). I found myself going to translation sites on my PC so I could insert the characters into the translation field and copy them... Not anymore!

Brilliant! This is very useful and will be one of the few widgets I keep onscreen all the time. I also like how you made it perfect for the "topmost" level in that it fits nicely into the menubar of any application. My only request would be for more colours... can I have pink? :)
