Beat Meter can be used to measure the beat (MM) rate of a piece of music. It can also be used as a simple metronome and tuning device.

See the Version History for full operation instructions.

[Editor's Note] Dragging this Widget can be achieved by holding down the Command Key on a Mac or the Control Key on Windows and dragging.

0.6 - initial release.
0.7 - added 440Hz tuning tone.
0.8 - added option to copy a measured beat rate to the metronome.
1.0 - added dock icon.
1.1 - internal changes.

To measure the beat rate of a piece of music, the user should click on the lower brown bar in time with the music. The Widget calculates a running average over a number of samples and displays the beat rate below the Widget. The text turns from white to green when the average is being taken over the number of samples specified in the Widget's preferences. The displayed number will become quite stable if a regular click rate is achieved.

The Widget can also act as a simple metronome. Click on the white triangle to start or stop the metronome. The metronome beat rate (MM) is shown in yellow text below the Widget and is set in the Widget's preferences.

Both modes can be used concurrently. Clicking the brown bar in time with the metronome will measure the metronome rate. This should, of course, be same as the metronome rate that has been set.

Clicking on the pedulum bob produces a 440Hz tuning tone for five seconds.

Friederang: I've just downloaded the widget from this page and run it on Mac OS X 10.3.9 with Konfabulator 2.1.1 and all appears to be correct. Widgets don't have to be installed, so I am wondering whether you installed Konfabulator on your machine before you tried to start the widget. If you have already installed Konfabulator and have been able to run other widgets, then you will need to give me details of your operating system and Konfabulator version and a more detailed account of what happened when you tried to start the widget.

Such reports are best placed in the appropriate Konfabulator forum.

It doesn't install. Any help? It looks like a good idea. I'm using a metronome to motivate swimmers with a surgial tubing swimming exercise (simulation at increasing rates) and music would ba lot better if I could measure the rates of popular songs.

Maeve O'Hara: I'll do the A440 tuning tone in the next release. I've currently made a version which produces a five second 440Hz tone when the bob of the pendulum is clicked upon. Eye candy will have to wait until the resident graphic designer has time - graphics is not my thing.

Pretty cool...Should add an A440 for those of us using as a metronome. Also, its not exactly eye-pleasing. :'(
