Google Images!
|
|
Howard Deiner
|
An interface to Google Images that provides preferences for image searching: size, file type, coloration, and Google Safe Searching. It also provides preferences for layout and control over the fullsize image display.
Use is simple. Type in a search, and get thumbnails back. Scroll through the thumbnails. Thumbnail tooltips provide image location and size. Click on a thumbnail to bring up a full size display of the image (subject to maximum preferences). If you click on a full size image retrieved, you get a popup where you can view the image in the webpage it came from or save the image to disk.
Respect copyrights and enjoy!
|
|
1.0 - Initial Release
1.1 - Fixed minor problem with thumbnail retrieval.
1.2 - Convert to CDATA enabled code format. Change text fonts to Trebuchet MS, Arial Narrow, Arial. Update skin to "Generic Glass" by Michael Bleigh. Use rectangle tracking in close symbol for ease in closing full image windows. Add context menu for full image feedback area to alow opening up original html context or close window even before image is fetched. Fix tooltip on full sized images (was sometime reporting values for wrong image). Fixed problem where if you opened up a thumbnail, closed it, and then tried to open up the first thumbnail that the image would not be retrieved. Fixed problem where changing the window layout could temporarily screw up the thumbnail display. Added 1x2 layout, for people who want a really small desktop footprint. Added facility to process "Did you mean?" feedback from Google.
1.3 - Added a download directory preference and use it to elimate asking what the save filename is. Added iconic display state for when you don't want the Widget in the way.
1.4 - Refreshed UI. Require Konfabulator 2.1.1. May have found an issue on Macs. Full image window parts were defaulting to mainWindow until used.
1.5 - Google changed their format for results. Google Images! follows suit.
2.0 - Thumbnail placement now takes maximum advantage of screen space available, not just centered in a maximum thumbnail possible area. All thumbnails are fetched asynchronously when the seach is made and as the thumbnails are inspected. Must faster paging back and forth through more thumbnails! Change preference items to allow all combinations of rows and columns with 2-5 rows of 2-5 columns. Added preference item for maximum of thumbnails to retrieve. Added preference item for number of seconds between successive page fetches, giving the user an easier chance to interact with the UI while prefetching is occurring. Keep icon opaque, for sanity.
3.0 Reset the code base to start from Site Sight!. This gives the following benefits to Google Images!: no more 404s on images not present; much better handling of prefetching operations; preloading of full size images; possibility of saving all found images to download directory automatically; better control of image size parameters for searching; more control as to thumbnail size creation; freedom from Konfabulator resource issues.
Added tellWidget interface to Site Sight!, so you can look at a full sized images and then tell Site Sight! to start crawling from the referring URL.
3.1 - Fix textarea issue with Yahoo Widget Engine 3.0. Rid destination filename of all illegal filename characters before saving image to disk. Require Yahoo Widget Engine 3.0.
3.2 - Fix display issue on right side of full image display. Update About screen to new format.
3.3 - Google changed their format for results. Google Images! follows suit.
3.4 - Fix for Yahoo Widget Engine 3.1.
3.5 - Another fix for change in Google Images! format.
3.6 - Yet another fix for change in Google Images! format.
3.7 - Wow. The "Next" tag in Google Images! pages keeps changing...

Been having some trouble with the google image widget. I put in "dog" and the widget scanned over 40 pages and not one picture of a dog was displayed. The site_sight widget works great so it's got to be google's changed something.
I'd like to have this same widget but have it show and display pictures form other website search engines.
Thanks for all your hard work! I love this Widget (and site-sight) although I couldn't ever get them to work together.
I use WindowsXP SP2 and all the updates!

I'm having the same problem as the ladies/gentlemen below, only difference is the problems occured today, the status info just displays "retreiving page 1-10" or something, and then claims "no images found for search", when the regular browser version does find something...you've solved all problems before, and I'm sure you solve this one :)

Great widget - have used it in the past. However, as of the new fix, it does not display any images. I'm not sure whether this is because it isn't retrieving them or because it simply won't display them (it is displaying a "fetching page __" at the bottom of the widget). Have tried several generic searches.

Super nice widget! However, since installing the latest version of Yahoo's Widget Engine, I can no longer see Google Image!'s icon when I minimize the widget. Perhaps its offscreen? Anyways, until I figure out how to recover from this problem, it's pretty much unusable. Too bad, because I loved using this widget before it got hosed. (PS - I've deleted this widget's registry entrys and Local settings but still no luck)

Hi Ognar!
Send me some of the specifics for your search parameters to howard.deiner@deinersoft.com and I'll go through them with you. It's a delicate balance between what Google returns to me and what actually exists on the web site visited. Google Images! checks the actual image to insure that it is downloadable, etc. I'd be happy to find out what's what with you through eMail.

I am giving this 5 stars because it does what it does well, and there is nothing else like it around, but I did notice a few flaws or things I would want added. First, I would love to be able to move the iconify icon. I think options such as top, bottom middle lower-right, etc would be handy. With sliders to adjust margins so that it could be moved away from the edges as needed. Second, the pause button would only flash on for a second (actually less) until I set the "time between fetches" to 0. That made it very hard to pause. I also had a hard time looking for files between 32 x 32 - 128 - 128 (I was looking for icons). I set the min and max, but "any size" returned 0 files (set the return to 1000). I was able to get decent results by changing the file size default, but if you are searching for a range that falls within two presets (say medium and small) you need to do 2 searches. I supposed this might be a problem on the Google end though. Also noticed

Everything is kept in system.widgetDataFolder (cleaned up after widget is closed or a new search is done). Hi Grifter!
One thing that I notice is that the new textarea control no longer eats the Enter key the same way that it used to. I've been pretty successful under the new Konfabulator engine using the backspace key to get rid of the carriage return / line feed and reissuing the search. Bear in mind that images are only returned in v3.0 of Google Images! if the site that holds the image responds favorably (no more 404s on images where Google has the image but the site doesn't). Perhaps you could eMail me at howard.deiner@deinersoft.com and give me the specifics of the search phrase used, operating system, etc. and I can debug this with you. Thanks!

If I search multiple times (12 times when I tested), the widget eventually stops searching and tells me: "No images found for that search". Even if I search for something I had results on earlier.

Hi Yash!
I'd getting some pushback from folks about the way that I'm maximizing screen real estate by a non-regular display of thumbnails. I may put a widget preference in for folks who want that "classic" look of centering the thumbnails in a standard checkerboard. It's high on my list. Send me an eMail at howard.deiner@deinersoft in a few days and I can send you an advance copy to evaluate.

Hi Yash!
Thanks for the heads up. Yup. Fixed in 2.1. Here's what 2.1 looks like so far...
2.1 Fix opacity on full size windows issue. clear out file cache after each use of the widget. Reset the prefetch delay timer evertime any of the following events occur: full sized image is retrieved, full sized image is closed, context menu is presented, image's original HTML context is brought up, image is saved to disk, any key is pressed in search textarea, previous or next is used. This is to allow the user to interact with the widget without fighting prefetching.

Hi Dennis!
Why not write me at howard.deiner@deinersoft.com and I can give you the update to 2.0? The problem, as you see from reading the comments so carefully (kidding!) is that Google has changed their site, so version 1.4 can't work anymore. Version 2.0 has lots of very useful changes. Also, I'm not sure about what you're talking about with the background. Send me a screenshot of what you're talking about. I just tested it, and all seems well. And you wouldn't believe how much eMail I get from people who want fairly mundane, non functional stuff changed, like the background color and transparency, or even leaving the footprint down to just the search bar (my way is to allow you to iconify it, and that's the way I coded it, but you may differ.) Looking forward to hearing from you!

I dunno what kind of packaging issue you had, but this release wont work properly when you change the backgroundcolor. If u do so, the there is a "missing-image" default png-grafic tile repeatetly shown.
Why did you change the default backgound at all ? It looked quite nice.

I've been in contact with weshsu, and what we seem to have here is a Konfabulator widget install issue. To solve it, go through these quick and easy steps:
1) Close any Google Images! widgets that may be open. 2) Close Konfabulator itself. You may even want to check ask Manager to insure that no Konfabulator.exe instances are running. 3) Open RegEdit from a command window, and go to "My ComputerHKEY_USERSHKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwarePixoriaKonfabulatorWidgetsGoogle Images!" (you can probably search on "Google Images!" to find the key). 4) Delete the keys starting at "Google Images!" 5) Now startup Konfabulator, make sure that the Google Images! widget is in it's rightful place (such as "MY Widgets), click on it, and see if it doesn't start working again.

Very Cool! A few thoughts tho Would be nice to have pic window stay open after iconify then people could have it stay on desktop. Kind like picture frame. Also option to have thumbs open in same window. And more choices like 1x3 ect. to help fit between widgets. example 1x4 just a bit big and 1x2 too small. Now if google would stop posting dead 404 thumbs all would be right.

A very elegant interface. Sadly on my machine the loading is slow and when a thumbnail is clicked on, it takes even longer to load the image, and even then it only is able to show the top third of the image (even when the preference setting is set to the maximum size). Am I the only one with a problem?

Hi Kernon!
If I make a copy to clipboard option, I will have to make the widget become completely Windows dependent, as I don't have a Mac and don't know enough about Mac internals to do this. It's really a Konfabulator platform issue. I feel the same as you - I want a clipboard that can contain images!
AFA your CPU issues. The widget makes heavy use of asynchronous HTTP calls. I don't see anything like you are seeing on my machines, but I don't doubt you. I do not make use of extra window updates, which could cause your sort of issues. It's interesting that the widget doesn't behave like this when in it's iconified state. I'll have to look into this further. BTW, are you on a Mac or Windows platform?

Great widget! However, you've got to add an option for copying to the clipboard for this to really be a complete tool. Also, there seems to be a recurring background process that runs when the widget is displaying images. My mouse movement freezes every second. I have plenty of memory and my CPU usage is in the 75% range while this is happening. Most widgets that I've downloaded don't do this. Every now and then I run across one that does and I really can't use it because of the performance hit. BTW, when the interface is minimized, the problem goes away. It must have something to do with the way the images are being displayed. I hope this can be resolved because it's a great widget. Thanks.

Hi Rob!
The information you are asking for is already present in tooltips, both on the thumbnail as well as the full sized image. I didn't want to take up valuable real estate with that information on the widget itself. In fact, I'm considering an option that would "dense pack" the thumbnails so that those that don't take up the full 150x150 would leave room for other small thumbnails. There are two problems with this. One is that the display is no longer retalinear and predictable. The other is that I would have to handle thumbnail retrieval differently, as there is no longer a maximnum of 20 per widget display (which just happens to be the number that Google returns in a search!)
AFA the searching being haphazard, exactly what do you mean? You should be able to use Google Images advanced search, set the same options in Google Images! and see exactly the same sequence of images returned. If you have a counter example, please eMail it to me at howard.

I'd love an option to see size info and file name below the images (in a small/customisable font too, natch!), otherwise searching is a bit haphazard, compared to the web based version.
Great effort so far though, thanks!

Love the idea, but unfortunately It doesn't work... well not for me. Everytime I enter a search it comes back with an error msg "unable to fetch from...Could not load URL". I'm pretty sure it not user error.

Hi firecracker6!
Your suggestion would be tough, as I'm displaying the information in a tooltip. But let me run this by you. I'm thinking of changing the widget so that you specify a download folder in the widet options. Then, when you want to save the image, you will automatically have the file saved to the folder without all of that messiness o specifying a filename. I'm also coming out with a new People Finder! and a new widget called Map-o-Rama! which will wor together. People Finder! will tell Map-o-Rama! information, and Map-o-Rama! will then do the work for mapping. I'm thinking along the same lines for Google Images! and a yet to be developed widget which will tell Google Images! to do things like search, change save directories, save the first n images, etc. This is to fulfill a request from someone else, but may be an even beter solution for wha you're really looking to do. If you think that the download folder is a good idea (and I hope that you

Hi firecracker6!
Yup. On at least Windows machines, there is a dropdown which shows allowable file types. Can't populate it in Konfabulator at present. Maybe a future version will allow me to do so. The only thing that you can do is either limit filetypes in the preferences to jpg, gif, or png (then you know the filetype) or use the tooltip over the image (which will give you the original filename). Wish I could do more, but Konfabultor only allows so much...

Hi Howard Deiner, thanks for the response. I would not mind typing in the file name.. if it came to that, however, the dropdown for the extension type in the save-as dialogue shows a blank, and the problem i see is, when the widget returns results from the google image search, how would you be assured that the file type you explicitly define (for the save) is the actual filetype of the hosted image you are trying to save? Thanks again for the wonderful widget, Also, is there a forum thread to follow this widget's development that you could post for the interested?

Hi Crasher-Link!
The real problem implementing your suggestion is that, at present, the is no built-in Konfabulator facility for video playback. I'd have to bolt on some ugly WIndows specific stuff to make the playback happen. I would guess that in the next one or two releases of Konfabulator, they embed such a facility, and that would allow your suggestion to come to life.

Hi firecracker6!
So far as I can tell, there's a basic limitation to the saveAs functionality available to me in Konfabulator. I know the filename, and would gladly prefill it in the dialog box for you, but I don't believe that I can. You can type in whatever name you want for the file, including it's extension (so that it opens your image viewer/editor).

Nice widget, i simply love the idea. However, I have a problem. I tried this out on 2 windowx XP XP2 machines, this is what happens: when you click on a thumbnail and it displays the full image. When you left click on the image and select "Save image to disk" and when the save-as dialogue appears, there is no "File Name" and the "Save-as TYpe" is blank. this effectively does not allow you to save an image except as an extensionless file. very frustrating, also, a collapse-able state would be nice. So that it can be reduced to a text-search field only bar when resting on your desktop. I really like this widget, can't wait to see the fix.

Hi ghostwalker!
What sort of a system are you running? What sort of problem do you get exactly? Do you get a file dialog box? What happens next? You can eMail me at howard.deiner@deinersoft.com and I'll try to figure out what the problem is. You are also welcome to test the new version and see if it fixes the problem...

Just uploaded version 1.2. eMail me if you need it bwfore the Konfabulator folks get to update the site.
Vesion 1.2 includes:
Convert to CDATA enabled code format.

To save images, first do a search. (Left) click on a thumbnail to bring up a full sized image (subject to maximum sized scaling preferences). (Left) click the full sized image (possibly scaled) to bring up a popup asking to either bring up the image in it's original context (browser will open to page containing the image), or save the image to disk (that's the one you want), or close this window (just the full sized image). On click on "save this image to disk", you should get a chooseFile dialog (actually, I'll fix this next time to be a saveAs dialog. Navigate to the folder you want and type in a name for the full sized image (which will not be subject to scaling). EMail me if you need more help.

Widgets are like women: there are those you'd love but don't understand, those you love even more since they left, those with whome a simple flirt is paradise, and those you really miss when they're not there. This widget and I is serious business!

It would be nice to add a feature that would hide all of the widget except for the search bar when you are not searching for anything. Then it doesn't take up a space with a big empty black box.
