Hash Slinging Slasher
Ricky Romero

It's a simple way to compare files. Just drag a file into the left side of this Widget, and another into the right side, and it will tell you if the files are different or not based on their MD5 hashes. It lights up yellow when it's checking the files, then it will light up green if they match or red if they don't.

Loosely based off of the Hasher Lite Widget by Dave McWhirter.

It seems like the yahoo widgets v4+ doesn't include the md5 program it used to, it changed, so this widget won't be able to use.

Doesn't work for me... Just shows red lights and no yellow or green.

deena, do you have Konfabulator installed?

Felix, I am aware of MD5 collisions, but aren't they pretty rare?

Felix - November 30, 2005
Because of a flaw in MD5, this Widget will sometimes report two different files as the same. See http://www.cits.rub.de/MD5Collisions/

having difficulty trying to install on tiger OSX, any ideas? when i drag annd drop into my widgets folder, there is a folder entitled "contents"...but no widget action??

chris - November 7, 2005
For windows, I still use "fc" sometimes. Mainly because it can tell you what exactly the difference is between two files. It can also be faster because you can set it to quit after finding # differences. Made more for text files though.

Spongebob is my main squeeeeze!...
well, one of them, anyway~

Ricky Romero - October 26, 2005
Thanks Thomas, I'll take that into consideration.

Great widget, but it could be improved a lot by adding a mechanism to hand files over to a merging tool like WinMerge. Once the widget turns red, one could click on it to show the differences (for text files). That would be very handy for programmers. To make it even more useful, one could think of an interface to versioning tools like WinCVS or TortoiseCVS...

Four stars for a great work

Bon travaille. It really help me identify some files that i did not recognize in any way, though it took a little bit of time to compare instinctely chosen folders. It would be great If I had a widget that could compare one files to multiple other files displayed. Merci beaucoup

Great work. Plus a good widget name ;)

Nice widget..... though what would be fantastic would be for the widget to tell us what IS different. Thanks Ricky..... great work.

I forgot to note... This Widget doesn't do drag and drop as well on Mac OS X because a bug in Konfabulator for Macs keeps the drop zones from using rectangular tracking, even though I have specified that it should be used.

What this basically means is you have to drop on the lights of the drop zones for now. Sorry!
