Stormy Weather!
|
|
Howard Deiner

Keep up with Doppler Radar as provided by the National Weather Service of NOAA (US only).
This Widget displays up to 10 windows with doppler radar loops.
|
|
In the setup mode for each window, you get to select the state and radar site location. You then can select 1 of the 6 map loop types, scale the window from 50-10%, set a refresh frequency, the number of loops to display, the interFrame interval (the time between frames) and the interLoop iterval (the time between loops). You may also open up a new window starting with the current values by clicking on the star.
Once you accept the option values (the big check mark), the window starts to suck up the data from NOAA. You can now go back to options (gear), start up a new options window starting with the current setings (star), or reload (the twin arrows). Once the initial data is taken from NOAA, you can also click on the small directional arrows to open up a new window at an adjecent site (check the tooltip to see were that is). While the animation is running, you may pause it (and then restart it) using the VCR controls on the left. When the animation is stopped (or over), you may restart it, or single frame backwards or forwards. The time of last update, next update, and current status is displayed at the bottom of the window.
All windows allow you to close them (the X) or iconify everything(the down arrow). The icon left on your desktop will bring all windows back to where you left them. Restart can occur in either mode.
Use the Widget preferences to set background color, background opacity, rollover objects color, label color, input field color and background clor, and message color.
If someone can report to me their experience with this Widget on Mac OS X, I would appreciate it!
1.0 - Initial Release
1.1 - Fix issue with skin preference changes causing mysterious black crosses on the screen.
1.2 - Fix issues with timers that can arise when using infinite loop animations. Added shorter interFrame and interLoop settings to test and make sure that things still hold together. Looks like you can wear out a timer. Hmmm. Add in composite maps for National, Alaska, and Hawaii. Make map time handle both interFrame and interLoop timings, saving some resources. Add zooming and panning for map images. Add a Widget context menu option for reload, in case all else fails. Keep icon opaque, for sanity.
1.3 - Fix issue where Widget refuses to become visible on restart. Update to new About screen format. Require Konfabulator 3.0.
2.0 - Really fix disappearing windows problem. Honest. Allow artibrary resize on windows using grabs on Widget corners. UI refresh (ala Photo Ace! reference), including squared windows, dividers, etc. Selectable layers for topography, counties, rivers, highways, cities, warnings, legend. Remember zoom and drag settings between sessions. Enable mouse wheel zooms. Add support for Composite loop data for 10 sectors now suported by NOAA. Composite loops sorta suck, as NOAA now uses aminated GIFs, which aren't suported well in Konfabulator. Still, it's a picture... Add context menu support for map type changes and layer toggles. Serialized radar image fetches, as large numbers of asynch URL fetches seem to give Konfabulator problems. :-((
2.1 - Fix for Yahoo Widget Engine 3.1.
2.2 - Disable warnings layer. NOAA isn't supporting the regular updating of images to synch with radar and legend data right now.

Dear Howard, You have brought a smile to my face. I have been searching for a widget like this ever since yahoo widgets came out. You don't know how many weather widgets I have, and now that I have your stormy weather and with yahoo weather, the rest are history. Now I don't have to open a browser to watch the NWS radars. I thank you so much for building such a great widget.

I am using Yahoo! Widgets engine V4.0.3 build 178 with your Stormy Weather! V2.2 Widget. When I "Hide Widget" (right-click on window) it is still accessible through the Widget Dock of course. When I restore your Widget via the Widget Dock, it does but at the same time shows the Widget iconify as well.

Love the program! Is there any way to relocate the icon? The icons for people finder! and Stormy Weather! stack on top of each other. I can't seem to relocate either.
On another note, the Cincinnati area radar images cannot be loaded. The program reports that no comaptible files can be located.

I've just uploaded a v2.2 that fixes the issue that's cropped up. Seems that NOAA has changed their Ridge radar data sets, and warning images are no longer being synch'ed with radar and legend images. I decided that I'd just disable the warnings layer (which I never saw results for, anyway). Shouldn't bother most users. Email me at howard.deiner@deinersoft.com for a copy if it takes too long for the YWE folks to post the update.

I like it. I always have. Lately, though, it just seems really slow. Does it HAVE to loop through more than 50 images? Can't I just set it to loop through the 5 most recent images? It would certainly speed load time on my end. It's still the best program out there!

The "no return from iconify" problem is caused by the YWE 3.1 update. A little over a week ago (when the update came out) I sent in an update to all my widgets to fix the issue. To date, the Gallery hasn't posted the updates. Please eMail me at howard.deiner@deinersoft.com and I'll be glad to send you the updated widget. Thanks!

excellent program, I love it, only problem is that my local NWS office has changed thier radar last week from the normal type (black map with base reflectivity) to the new enhanced type map which is being updated also on several other local office pages. MY local NWS is APX (Gaylord, MI). maybe look into that, because the widget stopped being able to retrieve the data right when this update occured.

To Sysyphus' Sister and others:
I've gotten some sporatic reports of 404s due to NOAA changing it's site structure. I've checked sites in NY CA, and WA, and they are fine, but I believe you that there are sites that are changed. With your indulgence, what I intend to do is not just fix the widget, but make it better. I intend to refresh the UI to Photo Ace! standards, and add RIDGE radar data from NOAA, with 8 layers of information. My real life workload is a bit heavy right now, so expect a V2 in a couple to several weeks. Thanks for your understanding.

Hi wholegrain!
Didn't know about the Ridge radar stuff until now, when I took a look. My first impression is that this should be a new widget. [rubs hands together and grunts] I also have to check the ability of Konfabulator to handle this, as the images presented from NOAA are supposed to be layered on top of one another (the images themselves appear to be GIF overlays). Have to check the ability of Konfabulator to handle that. And I suspect that you're looking to have a mouse over that gives you the ability to set a location and report distance and direction from that location [more grunting]. Looks interesting. Let me give it some thought. If I haven't captured your wants and desires, please write me at howard.deiner@deinersoft.com and let me know...

Just an idea but while this is definately the best radar widget available, the radar available at Weather Underground is so much better than the Noah feed used in this widget. The clean air mode eliminates clutter, and storm track and speed are shown. The Wunder Radar widget uses this feed but the Stormy Weather interface is so much better!

For those of you experiencing a loss of the widget under some circumstances, my appologies. Konfabulator isn't 100% in my book quite yet and I'm not sure where the problems lay. But in any case, here's a workaround to allow you to reinstall the widget and get back in action:
1) Open regedit. Delete the keys at HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareYahooWidgetEngineWidgetsStormy Weather!
2) Quit Konfabulator
3) Restart Konfabulator
4) Click on Stormy Weather! widget
5) Recustomize the widget

A very good widget that extends the functionality of a webpage instead of duplicates it. This is what I had in mind when I considered further avenues for Weather Warning. :)
One of the problems of the National Weather Service's Javascript method is that it's too large. Now I can dynamically adjust the window size.
Well done!

Hi Xiff!
I don't have a Mac to test on, but I happened to be at my Mother's a few days ago visiting, and tried StormyWeather! on a 256MB eMac running Tiger. The only thing that was amiss was that the pull down menu arrows were in the wrong spot. Not sure what's up with this. Looks like a slight Mac/Windows incompatability due to something like a text window width not showing up on Mac.
I was also in eMail contact with someone who had the problem affecting you, who said "I tried downloading it again some time later and the uncompressed file included the resources that the other attempts did not. Weird. I plugged it into the widgets folded and it worked."
If you continue to experience problems, eMail me at howard.deiner@deinersoft.com and I'll send you a fresh widget untouched by the Konfabulator folks, who seem to process them a little. Perhaps that will help.

Hi Dave and Vince!
Stormy Weather is a widget that pushes the Konfabulator boundaries as far as resources is concerned. I'm interested to know what operating systems you are working on. There is also a Konfabulator install issue that causes (even me) trouble from time to time. To "fix" that, go through the following steps:
1) Quit out of Konfabulator. Check with Task Manager to insure that no Konfabulator.exe instances are running.
3) Open RegEdit from a command window, and go to "My Computer/HKEY_USERS/HKEY_CURRENT_USER/Software/Pixoria/KonfabulatorWidgets/Stormy Weather!". 4) Delete the keys starting at "Stormy Weather!" 5) Now startup Konfabulator, make sure that the Stormy Weather! widget is in it's rightful place (such as "MY Widgets), click on it, and see if it doesn't start working again.
Bear in mind that version 1.1 (currently in the gallery) uses more resources than 1.2 (which I have posted, but can send to you

Hi Rick!
I had a report that version 1.2 was tested under OSX 10.3.9 and that it works (for all I know, 1.1 works, too). I'd love for you to eMail me at howard.deiner@deinersoft.com and I'll send you this latest version. Version 1.2 has been posted to Konfabulator for a few days now, but I'd be happy to mail you (or anyone else) a current copy. Version log: 1.2 - Fix issues with timers that can arise when using infinite loop animations.

Hi Johnny27!
Stormy Weather! v1.2 will take care of that. There's a zoom and pan feature that lets you zoom up and drag around to see the NOAA station designation and then drag around to the area of interest, or to zoom back down. I just want to make sure that I'm doing everything that I can to take from having situations where the timers "wear out" on me when in infinite looping mode on slower machines. It may or may not be possible to do this under Konfabulator limitations.

Great work here! I'd love to see some sort of label on the widget for what site I'm viewing as the print on the radar map is too small to read easily (NOAA issue, I would guess).

Be patient people!
I'm testing an advanced copy of ver. 1.2 and it solves a few problems and adds some features.
Howard has put a lot of time and effort into this widget and he listens to suggestions. Stormy Weather! is a work-in-process and Howard is developing a Masterpiece.

Looking forward to the next version. After restarting a few times over the last few days, it finally just crashed and showed a little icon, like an old movie w/ Stormy Weather on it...
I'm back to using the generic Radar widget.

About the only things I could suggest to make it a bit better.
1. Give it an option to animate when it detects a new image and has downloaded it.
This might let you cut down on a timer if you can pull the image file time stamp from an FTP.
2. a conversion bar (just a graphic rule the converts the DBZ of the radar to inches of rain an hour.

I tried it and like the idea of opening more than one location. Sure would be great to have a version of this to work with Windows. Many thanks

Thanks Tim! It's not my fault that Konfabulator doesn't run in Linux. Your rating really shows your deep understanding of this whole concept. Stay away.

Hi Jerry!
There are some nasty issues arising with Konfabulator timers. I rely heavily on them for my timings of animation and of course refresh. I made an update last night that fixes much of what affected you, and I'm now testing a theory that one can actually wear out a Konfabulator timer, so I'm recreating them every so often. If you'd like to have an advance copy of Stormy Weather! 1.2, send me an eMail at howard.deiner@deinersoft.com. Thanks!

Seemed cool, but next morning it hadn't updated for the last 2 hrs (had it set for 30min). Restarted anim and it ran thru about 10 frames then no more animation but the loop counter kept on going w/o chnging the images....

Hi EvilnSyde!
Thanks for the comments. I can easily reduce the size, but I'm wondering how readable it would become. There's also the issue of all of the controls fitting on a smaller footprint. Have you tried iconifying the widget with the down arrow in the upper right to take up very little space when you are done watching, but still want automatic updates on the map?
I was actually thinking about a panning function, so you could keep the map at a readable size and then drag it around inside the widget to see the part you are interested in.
What would that do for you?

This is EXCELLENT. I've been hoping someone would write a widget that had animated loop radar. Bravo !! I would however like an option to decrease its size smaller than 50%.

Hi Fred!
Contact me at howard.deiner@deinersoft.com and I'll send you a debuggable version that we can work with that tests my theory. It sort of hurts to go through a *lot* of development effort to get flipped off with a zero stars on a really complex widget...

Diggin' it here! Works great on my system and config. Nice to be able to check the doppler without starting up my browser and going to my own weather sites. Good job!

Hi T-Bird-Man!
I believe that Stormy Weather! takes Konfabulator to the edges of it's resources viability due to the number of windows, timers, and so on. Contact me at howard.deiner@deinersoft.com and I'll send you a debuggable version that we can work with that tests my theory.

When I launch Stormy Weather the screen opens and immediately a Program Error appears: "Konfabulator.ex.exe has generated errors and will be closed by Windows. You will need to restart the program." Restarting the program does the same thing. I'm using Konfabulator ver. 2.1.1
