Venice Webcams
Michael Wright

A Widget displaying the various webcam images found in and around Venezia, Italia and the Veneto region.

Ah, Venice...

Version 1.2, works with Windows XP and OS X 10.4+

This version of the Widget updates the webcam locations from the previous one. As many noted, the Venetian municipal webcams went down in 2005 and needed to be restored. I've located the new locations of those webcams and updated the code. I also updated the preferences menu to include more this go around.

This includes a few webcams from the Veneto region surrounding Venice, including Padua and Jesolo.

Additionally, I noticed a few of the original webcams from Venice appear to no longer work, show nothing, or show an old image. I decided to leave these included in the webcam, but in their own 'Defunct Webcams' category, in the hopes that they will be restored at some point.

Also please note, as of this update, the webcam for the Basin of San Marco and the Grand Canal appears to be misaligned or pointed down at the pavement. The camera still works, so I am hoping it will be rearranged soon.

Thanks for checking it out. Let me know if I missed anything.

Was working fine, then all od a sudden just stopped. Have same picture all the time, names keep changing, but picture stays the same.

Thanks for updating! Sending defunct cams to `defunct' list., rather than eliminating, was a great idea. Appears that Ponte Capello, San Lorenzo, Castello already has been restored. One of my favorite cams on the city of Venice's Web site, punta della dogama, has been taken down because of construction. Hope it comes back. Thank you for this nice widget.

Having the same problems with non-working images, mostly blank frames. At least I know others are having the same problem. I thought it was some kind of format incompatibility. Hope it gets corrected soon. I've never been to Venice, but somehow it fascinates me.

The majority of these webcams (I have all of the known cameras in Venice as part of the widget) are hosted by Venice's governmental website www.comune.venezia.it, which, on December 17th, was hacked and taken offline.

Only two of the cams are online now for the widget, with the rest coming whenever Venice's website becomes fully functioning again (sometime soon according to the authorities). The widget will become more useful at that point, naturally.

Another version of the widget will follow that. But thanks for keeping up with it.

Was one of my favorites, until the latest release of Yahoo Widget Engine. Now, after about 12 hours, the widget freezes up, shows only the top bars and bottom bars (no webcam image, and I have to force-quit it. Anyone else having this issue?
