To answer the recent questions: * I got the 'Error Login failed could not load URL with POST' but then when I logged in to XM Radio Online successfully the normal way and came back to the widget, it worked fine. If it happens to me again, I'll see if I can determine a solution * Parental controls are a good idea, I'll look into providing that in the widget. * To the guy who was wanting it to just display the song information without streaming music. If you click the stop button, the player will continue to retrieve updates for the display without playing the stream. The widget has to actually be closed to not retrieve channel information updates.
I am working on a revamp that would make the widget resizable, but I can't put a timeline on it. The sourceforge project, linked above, has rss feeds that you can bury in your feed reader if you want to be notified when a new version is ready

Was great!!
Just stopped working today! ?
Says: Error Login failed could not load URL with POST
And yes, my username/password is correct. I can still use the browser to stream music from XM's site.

Love this thing! My main reason for using widgets. I use it at work, much nicer than XM's online radio.
Thank You very much.

Jason - Any idea why it won't go to channel 152? Can't remember if XM provides that one online or not. Thanks--really works well.

Used this widget for a year and it rocks! Unfortunately, for the past 2 weeks when I open the widget it shows the 'Opening Media' and 'Ready' messages at the bottom of the tuner screen BUT the play button is non-functional. I can change channels and all other functions but nothing happens when I press the play button. I am on Windows Vista. I have reinstalled it many times thinking that would help. Any suggestions or advice? I am lost without Hear Music (XM 75).

Excellent widget - does not time out - use it all the time. Not as big as Windows Media or the XM via a browser. Better than my SkyFi that does not include album titles.

I would like to request a parental control option. My 10 year old daughter uses this widget and I would like to be able to restrict certain channels via password.

I really enjoy this widget, it works great. I am giving three stars, just until it is updated to resize. The station text is almost too tiny to read, that's why I would like to see a resize feature.
Thank you for the great tuner, it is much better than having the XM tuner on the screen!

Some of these comments are just stupid... the radio functions all work exactly like an actual XM radio tuner does! This thing works perfectly... if theres anything that could be added (probably impossible AND illegal) would be to record songs by way of exporting to mp3 format. Otherwise this the best widget ive seen! I love it, thanks for your efforts!

Works very well. I would like to see more skins, like most folks here. I would especially like to see a scalable rectangular skin. The preset system is also a bit weird. However, it, finds and holds channels perfectly for me, which is the main point. God work.. Look forward to the next version.

This widget works great for me. But I'm also looking for something simpler.
My XM tuner is in the living room with speakers wired into my office. So most of the day I'm listening to the actual satellite broadcast, but I have to run into the living room to see the artist/song name.
Any chance of modifying this widget so that it doesn't stream constantly, but still shows the current song/artist? I don't care if it's real time - updating every 30 seconds or so would be fine.
For now I'm just letting it stream on the low bandwidth setting and the mute button is pressed. That works OK, but it's not very elegant.
Thanks for the great widget.

And another note... I see most of the requests are for better skins. My graphic design skills are horrible (I spent 90% of the development time just trying to come up with the skin that you see now), but I would be glad to come up with a way of sharing the same code across different skins if someone else out there could contribute the skins. I know there's some O&A fans out there with exceptional photoshop skills :)

Also, 1.4 has been uploaded, but will likely not show up until next week, so go to the sourceforge page below. I never could reproduce the problems encountered with 1.3, so I just applied the changes that were instructed in various postings on this page and re-uploaded.

I've gotten everything set up over at sourceforge.net: http://sourceforge.net/projects/xmtunerwidget/
If you are having troubles, go download it from there instead, if it still doesn't work, submit a support request.
If you are interested in contributing or supporting this widget, please contact me through the sourceforge page and I will gladly add you as a developer so that you will be able to update the code and submit new releases. Hopefully this widget will become a community effort, but if no one is interested in contributing then this project will likely die because I rarely use the widget myself anymore and I just don't have the time to support it.

I too had used this for months, then starting yesterday was getting "Unable to Load Successfully". I love this widget and was stumped. I dl'd it again and replaced the origial and now works fine.
One thing, if any more updates are being worked on this is a lil small. Resizable and other Skins would be sick. Maybe the new Samsung Helix skin??? Either way I still love it an use it all the time.

I suspect users getting the "missing missing" problem are very likely falling victim to the latest version of the Widget engine which has problems with widgets in ZIP format. I had the same problem until I started using the newer "flat" archive format. See the forums and the workshop (above).

I was the one who wrote earlier about resizing and controlling the widget via IR remote. You might be interested in the fact that I've now modified the code heavily to a full-screen 10-foot-friendly MCE-lookalike that I can control from my sofa with my programmable remote...
If you're interested in what I've done and some feedback on what I'm trying to do with it as best as I can hack (I'm certainly NO programmer), let me know.

People that are having problems with changing the extension are running into Windows mediocre handling of file extensions and the difficulty involved in changing an extension once you set it to .zip I have modified the file, tested it to make sure it works again, and then zipped the widget file back up to put it on my server until the sourceforge project is up and running. For those that are having problems changing the file extension, you can get the file at http://www.webappeal.com/seawolf/XM_Tuner.zip Unzip the file into your Widget directory and then it should work properly.

Since the widget gallery doesn't seem to have any way to add other developers to a widget, I have submitted a request to host this project at Sourceforge.net. This will allow me to add other developers (Chimpy and Mordicus Egg?) who are interested in helping to support it or even adding new features. Best of all, the latest version will always be available from the alternate site without requiring me to upload it to the gallery and then wait several days for it to get reviewed. If it gets approved, I will post the link here and it can truly be an open source community effort.

Perfect widget. This has ALWAYS worked, except when something that is NOT CONTROLABLE (XM Modifying something) happens, this widget has worked for all 9 machines I have this installed on. For the people that cannot get this to work, there are numerous posts here that state how to get it to work, the best thing you can do is to pack up your PC and send it back, because you are to damn brain dead to own a PC anyway.

mgkrebbs I saw your post to Dove I did what you said and it now works again. Excellent and Thanks.
I didnt download the widget I just used the one already in my widget folder because it is v1.3. I Changed XM_Tuner.widget to XM_Tuner.zip. I Opened the file XM_Tuner.zip. I then Delete the .kon file with the "~" after the filename(it's dated 2/2006). I Closed the XM_Tuner.zip file and changed the file back to XM_Tuner.widget and then ran it!

Dove - Download v1.3. Change XM_Tuner.widget file to XM_Tuner.zip . Open the file XM_Tuner.zip. Delete the .kon file with the "~" after the filename. (it's dated 2/2006). Be sure NOT to delete the .kon file from 7/2006. Close the .zip and change the file extension back to .widget and run it! This worked for me but was not my idea. Chimpy published a fix for v1.2 and when Jason integrated it into v1.3, another error was created that was resolved by Mordicus Egg. I just wanted to sum it all up.

Good Fucking job! Now it does even work. I'm done with this thing, the entire freaking radio service went down the drain I guess its only fitting that the widget follows the same path. hate this post or not you have to agree that update fixed nothing. You can come up with all youre silly ass miracle fixes on your own and I realize the yahoo widget engine is free but yahoo needs to have some kind of quality control on the widgets loaded on their server. I'll give this a one star despite the fact this used to be a great little toy.

Be sure NOT to delete the .kon file from 7/2006. Close the .zip and change the file extension back to .widget and run it!

It seems there are diffrent fixes for the same prob. Anyway I did it through a modified "Chimpy" way when i saved the widget file, changed it to zip file. Then found the .js code then changed that to .jsp saved that, then opened the new file, And now i'am cooking with gas again. By the way, I now have a picture of Chimpy that looks similar to Washington crossing the Delaware with Chimpy in th front of the boat pointing the rest of us in the right direction. Add me to the "Chimpy's solution fixed it for me" category. Thanks, Chimpy!
If others are having trouble, what I basically had to do is go into the ZIP file (the renamed XM_Tuner.widget), delete the old XMtuner.js and add the modified XMtuner.js in the exact same subdirectory. After renaming the tuner file to XM_Tuner.widget, it worked great.

Just tried Chimpy's solution and it worked perfectly. Assuming you can follow a few simple steps, you'll have no trouble.
Then again, if you're like Sara, Joe, Kim, big big, rico, mel and others who probably tax their mental faculties banging sticks on rocks, you might have to wait until someone presses the 'enter' key for you.

Why don't you all pony up a few bucks to help Jason with development costs? No takers? Hmmm. Oooh! You could use one of the myriad OTHER widgets for XM! Yeah! That'll show ol' Jason a thing or two! What? Not too many choices out there?
As for the rest of you mongoloids of the "click it once and it should do it all" mindset ... do you EVER think for yourselves? Do you stare blankly and get all annoyed at everything else that might require a little thought? God, the retards who pass for "computer literate" nowadays, astound me.
Keep up the good work, Jason ... and thanks for taking the time to develop the widget!

Just found out today that this widget is broken due to changes in XM's online player. I just uploaded version 1.3, so once it gets through the system it should fix the problem. Sorry I didn't notice this sooner, but I don't even use the widget anymore ever since my workplace throttled streaming media and I got a MyFi. I need to figure out how to add other developers to this project if that's even possible. XM can change their site at any time and totally break this widget and I might not know for weeks or months. On top of that, some of you have some really good ideas for features that could easily be implemented by some of the other widget developers who are actively using this widget.

Is it possible that jason has no idea this is going on? i feel bad for the guy. Hes taking a beating, and may not even be around to know it. Give the guy some credit. The widget is great. People who are bad mouthing the widget, download it, fix it. YES its not a perfect world, but apparently jason isnt even around to defend himself, and maybe to even know its broken. However i agree... Jason needs to post the fix himself so it works when it downloads.

Thanks all. I appreciate your kind words, but I must say my reason for fixing it was pretty selfish since it was killing me that it wasn't working. Jason's widget rocks.
Dan- Thanks for the added instructions to make it easier for those who were having issues. I probably should have been a bit more less complicated in my instructions. Also, I didn't see a way to update the widget without being the original author, otherwise I would have uploaded the fixed version.
Jeremy - I've never edited or created a widget before. I used Ethereal to capture a XM web browser login session to determine the files that it was using and then just compared that with the code that Jason developed to identify the discrepancy. XM Fan should get some credit for having the quick eyes to capture the error message that helped identify the error.

ZooKeep123, What I did was the following
1)Changed extension to zip 2)Extract files, make sure you extract with directories so the files get put in proper directories 3)Edit files are noted (far down this list) XMtuner.jsf 4)Used winzip to rezip entire directory structure 5)Renamed files extension back to widget
On a side note, do they allow a non-owner of the widget to send updates for something a minor as this update. Do not get me wrong, it is major update for usage just a minor code change.

I'm delighted with Chimpy's fix. It WORKS. Initially, it wasn't working for me, but I was persistent as I was doing some things wrong. I had to unzip all the files, extract them . . . Then then appeared in a separate folder on the desktop and I made the changes. Follow Chimpy's directions very carefully. How strange, all that seemed necessary was one letter to be changed. Where did it get unchanged?

I had to extract it and change it and then rezip it in order to work. I was changing it to a zip and then opening it and trying to change it while it was still zipped. It created 2 files but I deleted the old one but it wouldn't work. I guess I couldn't see the answer in front of my face until Dan posted and made me realize what I was doing wrong.

Great. My only problem with the fix is that I just tried to add the file back to the zip file. After that both files existed. I had to rezip the entire thing to get it properly done. I am giving a 3 stars, but will give 4 once an update is complete.

Perfect Fix Chimpy. Thanks so much. I can see how this might cause problems though, so Jason you might want to just do it yourself and post an update. This should make it work again. It did for me anyway.
-Change filename of the widget from XM_Tuner.widget to XM_Tuner.zip -Open the .zip file -Open the XM Tuner.widget folder -Open the Contents folder -Copy the XMTuner.js file to your desktop -Right click on the XMtuner.jsf file that you just copied and Open With a text editor such as Notepad -Find the line that states: configURL.location = "http://player.xmradio.com/player/_js/config.js";
-Modify the line by changing the .js to .jsp. The new line should read: configURL.location = "http://player.xmradio.com/player/_js/config.jsp";
-Copy the XMTuner.js file that you just modfied back into the contents folder of the original zip file. -Change the name of the file back to XM_Tuner.widget and give it a try.
I hope this works as well for you as it did for me. Good luck

I'm having the same issue with the widget as a few others. It starts to connect then displays "Logged In" on the Widget, but a pop up window displays the message "XM_tuner was unable to load itself successfully". Occassionally I can get it to connect, but it displays an error on the Widget screen about an URL incompatibility. I can't get it to duplicate, so that I can pass on the exact phrase to you, though. This morning was the first time that I had this issue. I hope XM isn't blocking the Widget!
This is my favorite Widget, and the only reason I subscribe to the Widget concept from Yahoo at all. I hope that there is a patch available, because I will go nuts at work each day without it :) And, if there isn't a patch, if XM is blocking the Widget from gaining access, then I just want to say thank you to Jason Williams for providing a Widget that has brought so much happiness to my work day for as long as it was able to!

Can't get it to work anymore. I tried to install the 3.0 version of the engine from file hippo as a previous poster suggested, but since the file just downloads the install files from the net it always installs version 3.1.2. This was my main way to enjoy my XM subscription, hopefully the author can iron out the issues, or XM can release an official widget. Prior to the engine updates from 3.0 it ran flawlessly.

Starting a few days ago the widget can no longer play channels 21 or 22. I think this coincided with a channel line-up change at XM. I don’t know if any of the 150+ other stations are having problems. All the others I listen to are still working. Other than this recent hiccup, this is my most used widget. I love it.

Ahh. I've got it! The reason that it didn't play on the laptop is that the WMP was the one that came originally with XP. Once I d/l'd the current one, it worked like a charm. I still don't know the difference between the "B" and the "A" by the strength bars in the display though. Re. Sosha's question: They channel lineup doesn't change until 4/17, which would be today. I'm sure if you try it now it will.

The new channels XM has released with not play. If you tune to Big Tracks (49) to plays Sunny (24). It will display the channel name and channel number correctly, but the song metadata is from Sunny (24). Any ideas?

Well, since I've not gotten an idea why this thing isn't working on the laptop, let's try a different tact. What is the meaning of the Capitol letter A in the lower right part of the screen, next to the signal bars. On my desktop it's an A with Signal bars and on my laptop it's a B with no signal bars. Anyone?

Dan, I tried to leave it on for a long time, to no avail. I think there's a key system component that the widget uses to pipeline the sound and it's missing. I have Realplayer as well as Windows media player working fine. If anyone knows how it translates the feed to sound, please let me know.

This Widget remains excellent. Your commitment to fixing the (minor) issues is also great. When I downloaded the newest version, I noticed the filesize was about twice what the old one was, which I thought was kind of weird... so I peeked inside the package, and I noticed that you seem to have left your SVN files in the package! I also noticed that all of the PNG images seemed to be rather large files, considering how few pixels they were. Well, I decided to run PNGGauntlet (a free PNG shrinker) on all the files and remove the Subversion directory, and a few minutes later, I had a Widget file that was about 2% of the size of the posted version (76 KB vs. 3.5 MB)! If you would like this new, MUCH smaller file to post, let me know. Or you can just run those steps yourself.

Works great. Only one nit. When in channel mode (showing each channel), the up arrow scrolls the list upward (lower number channels), but when listening to a channel, the up arrow scrolls ?up? (higher number channels). Is there a way to make the behavior consistant, so that a given arrow gives lower numbered channels reguardless of mode?
Thanks,

I have found that if you leave it open for awhile (12+hours) in a stop position, the tuner will not reconnect. It is stays in a state of “Receiving XM Stream”. The only work around that I have found is to close the widget and restart it. Anyway, baring that little bug, it is the best widget and works perfectly!!! I use it everyday.

I like the widget, but I have 1 semi-major problem. I find if I listen to 1 channel for more than 45 minutes to 1 hour, tand then try to change channels, the channel won't change. It'll say "retrieving stream", but never change. It still streams the channel I was origianlly listening to. I'd like sizing to be customizable by resolution. I run a 1280x1024 resolution, and have a little difficulty with the size of the buttons!
Otherwise, very functional, MUCH better than XM's own interface!!!!!!!!

Wonderful Widget, I truly love it.
My primary request has been relayed before, but another vote. Can we have another "re-login" button ?
On my laptop if I put it to sleep and wake back up the stream is dead. When I used to use the XMRO website it would say "bad cookie" and I would have to re-log in. In this widget's case we have to close the widget and reopen (a pain). Help !?!? Please ???

I believe that the widget doesn't account for your login being timed out of XM. (ie. if you stop the stream for awhile) The widget will just sit at the retrieving channel stream status. Stopping and starting does no good. You have to restart the widget to get it to log in again.
Otherwise very handy widget.

Wow. What an amazingly slick, full-featured, excellent Widget! Having used a "real" XM tuner, everything functioned exactly as I would expect it to. This is so much better than the crappy website XM has! I would echo the desire to have resizability and/or alternate skins. I'd also like the ability to disable "auto-tuning" (switching to a station a few seconds after it's been browsed to). Overall, though, great job!
