Comments for BBC Radio Player

raymondlanesmith - July 11, 2007
I have now finished a new Widget that works with the new stream data addresses from the BBC (as up to date as today 11 July 2007). I have redesigned the whole user interface design and have a number of new features that sets it apart for John Hinds original idea. It is now with the Yahoo team awaiting approval.

The stream data is held in a separate file so it will be easier to keep this version up to date should the BBC make changes. I am already looking at improving this version so that in the future users will be able to change the addresses through the widget.

I love the idea of this widget, but it turns out to be so frustrating! I'd just like to have a BBC radio widget that worked, not one that I had to learn how to be a widget writer to edit so I could get it to work! Any chance this will be updated soon using the correct links?

Unfortunately I must respect the author’s rights so I cannot make my altered copy available unless the author gives permission.

I am working on a completely new design that will only use the parts of John Hinds’ version that are “open” and free,

It should be ready in a week or two depending on processing the new art work and extra program features.

I would certainly like it! Could you put it up somewhere so that it could be downloaded.

I also found that the streams referenced in the program did not function, so -
I have amended the .kon file so that it reads in an included file with all the streams' paramenters, with the home pages and logos tightly linked (if you selectd a station the correct logo and associated home page are selected automatically).

I have also changed the reload of the widget that happened every time you changed station. My version now playes the new station as soon as selected (saved) in preferences.

I wonder if the author would like a copy of the amended widget so the users out there can benefit.

that fix works a treat, many thanks.

Now I just have to get my act together and change all the links.

For those guys commenting below - nothing techie involved, honest, or I wouldn't be able to do it!

1. Google "WinRar" and download the program - it's useful to have anyway.
2. Run WinRar and open the widget file.
3. Browse for 'BBC_Radio.kon', Copy and Paste to the desktop - keep WinRar open
4. Run notebook and open 'BBC_Radio.kon'
5. Go to the webpage 'http://dave.org.uk/streams/'
6. In notepad find the links for each radio station - they are in a big bunch and very obvious
7. Copy and paste the new links from the website on top of the old links in notepad.
8. Save notepad file and close
9. Copy 'BBC_Radio.kon' and Paste back into the WinRar overwriting the original file.
10. Close everything and open widget - should work now.

I saw this message
"if you open the widget file in WinRar you'll find a file inside it called BBC_Radio.kon. Copy that file to your desktop. You can then open the copy with notepad and change any broken links"

I assume this will solve the problem in the messages below

Now, can someone translate this into idiot speak? :-)

I have real player plus, and I am also getting the same error messages that file and DNS server can't be found, etc. Am I missing something? Is there a newer version that I'm not aware of? Thanks!!!

I like the idea, but seem to be having some trouble getting it to work. I'm using real player alternative, and can listen to the station when I go to dave.org.uk, just pops up the player and buffers. But when I try to use this widget, I get an unable to locate server error, no dns entry, then it lists the station address that I have tested and which works. Clicking on the more info button brings an error that crahes the widget. Any idea whats going on? Perhaps its because its not the full version of RP, but its a mess of a program that I really don't want to install unless I have to.

ammarhm, if you open the widget file in WinRar you'll find a file inside it called BBC_Radio.kon. Copy that file to your desktop. You can then open the copy with notepad and change any broken links (the current links for all BBC streams can be found at http://dave.org.uk/streams/). Save the file, then place it back into the widget using WinRar. When you open the widget next using the widget engine, you'll get a message saying that the file has been modified since you last used it. Just click on "Use Widget" and you're all set.

So for the next build you will need-
Most important, do not have volume and mute do system changes just widget ones.
An easy way to change the radio feed address so you not have to go into the .kon file and change by hand.
Four favourite buttons down the side, like on my bedside radio, that you set to station of choice to stop having to go to pull down menu.
Way to set auto on when pc is switched on if wanted.
Make it sizable, to allow small scale size.
Take away big ugly goto homepage button and make small and pretty, it gives room for favourite buttons too.
Maybe button to load station web cam in browser, not big need though.
Make outer case come in more jolly colours.

Well you did ask for suggestions ;)

Hey Tony H, this link should work for BBC 4.
rtsp://rmlive.bbc.co.uk/bbc-rbs/rmlive/ev7/live24/radio4/live/r4_dsat_g2.ra

Also, any links that die can easily be found at the bbc website. Say radio 1 goes down. Go to radio 1's homepage, click listen live, then right click save as the link that says 'play in stand alone real player' (it will be a .ram file). One you save that, open the .ram file with notepad and in it you will find the .ra link...which is what you will need to put into the widget for it to play.

Hope that helps!

The problem doesn't seem to be with the widget or the engine. The BBC seems to really be cracking down on net users listening to sports programming that isn't supposed to be broadcast outside the UK.

If you open the widget file in WinRar and edit the .kon file, you can change the links for Five Live and Five Live Sports Extra to the international versions. These are...

Five Live: rtsp://rmlivev8.bbc.net.uk/farm/*/ev7/live24/radio5/live/r5_tl_int_g2.ra
Sports Extra: rtsp://rmlivev8e.bbc.net.uk/farm/*/ev7/live24/radio5/sportsextra/live/r5sx_tl_int_g2.ra

I don't know how to do it, but I suspect that if you can spoof your machine to look like it's on a UK IP address, you can run the widget as is.

I was having problems with the widget when I first installed it last week. I just tried it again and got it working with the current version of the Widget Engine.

When the widget opens up it shows a white BBC Radio logo. I clicked on this, waited for 10 seconds or so and the radio feed started. I've tested it with 5 Live and Radio 1.

I've been using it for a while and have had absolutely no complaints other than 2 things. 1] I wish there were a 1-click way to mute the player without having to close the entire widget because clicking on the speaker mutes ALL sound from the computer. And 2] for some reason it's not working as it used to. I can't change the logo and no matter how many times i try to change the station it refuses to play anything so right now I'm BBCnews-less =[

I agree with Richard. (and not just because we have the same name) Ever since upgrading to YWE (Yahoo Widget Engine) v3.1 this widget no longer works. It's a great widget that has served many of us well and I hope it can soon be fixed so that it continues to do what it's done so well. (and maybe even a few improvements? ;-)

Love this (though I had to sort out a long running problem with my real player before it would work). I am running 2 for my two favourite stations. I was a bit confused that the instructions say to double click, but it only requires me to single click. A double click therefore leaves it in the same state it started in (this is in windows XP). Also it would be great if you could have a choice about logo/image when the radio is NOT playing - as it would make it easier to run mulitple radio players. The logo only shows up when it is playing, so I can't use it to decide which of them I want to start. Victoria J.

Having it off by default is a great resource-saving feature. Have you any plans to add support for the Windows Media streams that the Beeb is now offering? Not every service has them - Radio 3 is a glaring omission! - but at least with other services I've liked the sound of the Windows Media streams better.

I can't get BBC 4 - although I can get it through my RealAudio player if I go diretly to their site. After waiting for some time, I get RealPlayer error, mentioning this URL - rtsp://rmlivev8bb.bbc.net.uk/farm/*/ev7/live24/radio4/live/r4_dsat_g2.ra
Maybe they have changed the URL and your player is poiting at the old address, or the timeout pariod on your widget is too short. Can you, please, fix this?

This is one of the best radio widgets around, but Why oh why can you not give this radio a six? I know, because it can still be improved and I think I know how.

This radio widget could do with a sidebar which comes out to view the available stations and auto hide when a selection has been made. The selection should also auto update the logo at the same time. This would reduce the current selection process from seven clicks down to two. What an energy saving!
