mrwizard59106, if you hold down shift+ctrl and right click on the Yahoo! Widget icon in the system tray (lower right,) there is an option to turn on debugging, then you can try runnig it again and see if there is an error. You could also try manually deleting the ShootIt.widget folder (C:\Documents and Settings\[replace with your profile name]\Local Settings\Application Data\Yahoo\Widget Engine\ShootIt.widget) and any other shootit.widget files you can find, and trying again. I hope that helps.

I can't get it run on my machine, Win XP Pro. I select Get Widget, Start Install, Run, it downloads, Select Run and nothing happens. I know this works great, i've installed it on other machines.

Really cool way to pass time, but once there are only a few explosions or insects or whatever, it starts to react slowly. Also, it would be way cool if the different ammos could interact (e.g. hammer and nails, hammer and insects, flamethrower melts ice, flamethrower melts insects, machine gun blows up insects, etc.) maybe even make the insects controllable or make them eat the bananas or let us use the paint to turn them different colors. you get the point. landmines are cool too.

This is very nice! I remember using an app like this a looong time ago. It had rotten eggs and dirty diapers. Oh and also the support to play pranks on anyone on your network. Don't remember what that was called.......
Anyway, I love this! Brings back so many memories. One thing, though. The belt seems to stay on top of all other screens no matter how below I set it. That doesn't really matter to me too much with most apps I use. Just thought you might want to know this. Maybe I'm missing a setting? Also, the ammo packs don't work if the transparency is set to below 50%.
Keep up the great work! This widget is so much fun! :) Thanks!

jordan, when you download it and it asks "Open" or "Save", select "Save". Then when it asks you where you want to save it on your computer, make sure the file name is ShoootIt.widget and you should be fine. If you already have it downloaded and know where it is, you can simply go find it and rename it like you would any other file on your computer.

Secret, the name of the widget file is dependent on the user when it is downloaded. What is happening is that when someone downloads the file and it has the same name as a file already in the internet cache, the browser changes the default name of the new file to something else (i.e. ShootIt (2).widget) I am currently working on possible resolutions.

Bob, I am afraid we are pushing the envelope here. The widget engine really wasn't intended to do things like this. There are no drawing subroutines in the engine. Drawing is a matter of positioning, sizing, and rotating images with scripting.

I really like this widget just to dink around sometimes. I really do like this widget, but its performance is pretty bad. I don't know if it is due to your code, the yahoo engine, or architecture(I highly doubt) but really the only issue I have this is even on my massive tower( P4 3G, 2Gig of ram and Radeon X700Pro) some of the ammo, and the response times are terrible. They don't draw well at all, chainsaw and paint are the worst, but the flamethrower is really bad too. A lot of the addon ons are REALLY slow to draw, which is just silly. I think you or people making add ons, or both need to really take a look at how well some of these work. The paint on draws straight lines trying to follow mouse movements.
Also, any chance we could get an update to change ammo size based on ammo type rather than for all ammo types?

If any of you are having problems installing an AmmoPak, and know that you are running 3.2 or later of ShootIt, please verify that the ShootIt widget, is indeed named "ShootIt.widget" otherwise the AmmoPak will not be able to find it's new home.

1) I have componentized it, so adding ammo will be easy, but still need to document it. When that is available, it would be simple for someone to build that into an ammo. 2) I am afraid I tried that, and it looks a little different but not much. 3) I have thought about the ability to move the belt, but that feature is a little lower on the list, so I don't know how soon it will happen. Thanks for the input.

Very cool. I do have a couple suggestions: 1) Have several different images for each ammo type, and select which one to use at random so it's not so cookie-cutter. 2) Layer the shot images behind previous ones, that way you can't shoot a hole in an existing hole. Start with a z-index much higher than you expect anybody to ever reach (10,000,000 is usually good), and then decrement from there with all subsequent shots. 3) Make a version that will float on the desktop, but will only fire when I hold down a modifier key. That way I can work and use it at the same time. As a programmer, I often find the need to SHOOT STUPID CODE THAT WON'T WORK, and this widget is very "therapeudic." Greater functionality would be nice. Thanks for your work man.

I am working on an expansion pack. So far, I have darts and the flame thrower (needs a little work.) Working on an Axe as well. I am also going to work on the dual display. I will see if I can do anything with the sounds, but unfortunately we don't have much control over sounds, so what seems right timing-wise on one computer may not on another computer.

This one is freakin awesome. The only reason I don't give it 4 stars is that I wish their were a few things that hold this widget from being perfect (I don't just give 4 stars to just anyone :-P). First of all, I wish the machine gun reloading sound were a little better (kinda laggs between shots, but still fires, though not that big of a deal). Secondly, the rocket launcher sounds more like a bomb being dropped, but again, this is just me getting nit-picky. Also, I really wish their were a way to change which corner the ammo belt was on (but that might just be me). On the plus side, this widget is GREAT for getting out your frustration (I thought Blh's comment was hilarious), as it's true - sometimes you just gotta show your programs who's boss. Also, the interface is pretty clean, though to add a suggestion, I think it might be cool if you could have the belt show up on the Konfabulator desktop, but allow you to switch out and keep shooting your screen (thou

AZ, It sounds like the "back" image is not getting positioned correctly. Try renaming the widget and running it. Let me know how it goes. Unfortunately, I am unaware of a way to make the widget engine play more than one sound at a time, and what is happening is you are clicking and starting a new sound before the other is finished. I could put the widget to sleep long enough for the sound to finish playing, but then the widget would seem really slow. I will look into the space bar option. As to the belt, it is a bandalero which commonly worn across the chest. Thanks, Dave

Dave, I'm noticing that when I fire, the bullets and rockets don't land where my mouse pointer is. Also, you should make it so that a person can just use the space bar to fire, or hold it down for rapid firing, while using the mouse pointer to aim. You should also add a machine gun - that would be fun! And lastly, when the rocket fires, the sound bite associated with the rocket cuts off abruptly at the end instead of naturally trailing off like it should - so that needs to be fixed. :Lastly, please make some other interfaces other than the belt, or at least make an option for the belt to be horizontal or vertical (diagonal doesn't make sense), and make it resizable.

CP, you might edit the widget and change the "opacity" of the "back" image to a higher number, and see if that works. On my windows system a value of 1 works fine. On my Mac, I had to bump it up to 13 to work. If that doesn't fix the problem, another possibility is that something is keeping the "back" image from gaining focus. In this case you could diagnose it by turning any other programs off until it does work, then you would know what the conflict is.
AZ, for you it sounds like the "back" image is not getting positioned correctly. Try renaming the widget and running it.
Let me know how it goes.
