piroman3145: You can hide the widget with one of the following solutions:
1) Click the close button (top right corner). This will close the main widget window to an icon. Right click the icon and select "Hibernate Widget" if you don’t want the Now Playing Window to pop up on track change. To show the widget again, just click the icon.
2) Right click the Widget Dock icon and select "Hide Widget". To show the widget again, right click the Widget Dock icon and select "Show Widget".
If you have any other suggestions on how you want the auto hide feature to work, let me know by e-mail.

I really enjoy this widget, but i wish there was some way to auto hide it, so it's completely out of the way when it's not needed. It would be amazing if there was.

2) Current iTunes state: The internal object in YW that keeps track of the iTunes state gets out of sync when iTunes is closed and then restarted while YW are running. To fix this issue you have to restart the widget and sometimes you also have to restart YW.
I have sent a bug report to Yahoo Support concerning the two issues I’ve mentioned. I’ve heard nothing since the initial response so I will have create a workaround for the two issues in the next release.

Aswitzertwiz (and others having problem with out of sync issues): This widget depends on two things to stay in sync with iTunes. Sadly, both seems to contain a bug or not work properly in Yahoo! Widgets version 4.0.x:
1) Track change notification: This widget receives and responds to iTunes events on every track change to update information in the Track Display and to pop-up the Now Playing Window. As far as I know there are two things that stop these events from being received by the widget:
a)The events can get lost if you upgrade iTunes to a new version. To fix it you have to do a Repair install of iTunes.
b) After Yahoo Widgets 4.0.x was released some have more trouble then others receiving the iTunes events. Some don’t receive iTunes events at all, some receive the events once in a while, and some experience no problem. I have no idea of what is causing the problem, but I do know that if you revert back to YW 3.x the events from iTunes will be received

This is a great widget with tons of cool features. I just want a widget that shows the coverart of the currently playing song in iTunes. This widget seems to be the only one to attempt that. Unfortunately, it crashes all the time and hardly ever stays in sync with what iTunes is playing after the initial song. Is there a new version coming? I've tried everything you suggested to others here - reinstalled iTunes, computer, Yahoo! Widgets, but nothing seems to work.

Hi Thomas.
thx for your comment. As far as I researched, it is the PDM (a Proactive Defense Module) in connection with the cmd.exe.
From an external FAQ: "KAspersky PDM updated for RootShell: no more alerts on cmd.exe - parent process will be dispalyed. Try to check build 278 or higher"
I guess this explains the problem. Thx for your work and widget, Mike

diana1680: As far as I know, the key to fixing the problem is to do the right combination of restarting Yahoo! Widgets, repairing iTunes and rebooting your computer to make everything work together again.
If there are any more who have problems with getting updated track information when iTunes changes track, let me know by e-mail.
Rapanuy33: I never tried Kaspersky and are not sure what the definition of a ROOTSheel activity is. I guess it's complaining about the thumbnail generation for the album artwork. This is done by calling an exe file with runCommand and runCommandInBg.
Edward: Thank you for the rating and suggestion. I want that feature myself, but are worried about the amount of CPU it will require during browsing and the code complexity. But I will see if I can make it work somehow.

Arun: The Now Playing Window should appear on every track change if the "Enable The Now Playing Window" option is set in the Behaviors preference page. But this might fail for one of the following reasons: 1) iTunes is closed and re-started while the widget is running. Close and re-open the widget to reconnect it to iTunes.
2) iTunes COM interface is not working (might happen after an iTunes upgrade). Start the iTunes installer program and choose the repair install option.
3) The YWE has crashed or thrown some error message. Close and re-open the widget, and if that doesn’t work, close and re-start the Yahoo! Widget Engine.

I want this widget to show the album art for every song. Why doesn't the "Now Playing window" appear automatically each time? Also the album art does not change for the current song. Some how the program seems to missing to detect the change of songs in iTunes. Will be happy to know the resolution and use this widget.

aarontang100166624: Thanks for the rating. This widget works with both iTunes 7 and iTunes 6. If you are experiencing a problem with this widget (or any other iTunes widgets) after upgrading to a newer version of iTunes, a repair install will fix your problem. Just start the iTunes 7 installer program and choose the repair option.

Hi Thomas Your widget was the only hit when I searched the widget library on "Pandora". I just discovered Pandora and love it, but I don't use iTunes so it looks like using your most excellent widget won't work for me. Have you thought of creating a separate "Pandora" widget, ideally very clean and simple, just a few controls: play, pause, skip, thumbs up, thumbs down and Menu, plus display the Station name, artist and song title. Keep up the great work!

is there a way to override the shortcuts ?
I'm using Mozilla FireFox and whenever I wanted to open a new tab (Ctrl+T) it now shows 'Now Playing', the 'Now Playing' is very cool but I can't open a new tab in firefox anymore. It would be good if the user can change to whatever shortcut key we want.

I like you idea very much but you should make it as an navagation system. Like only list the albums on the main window then if the user clicks it, it lists the songs. It will be better then having all your songs listed all at once. I hope you like my idea :)

Todd Lininger: Thanks for the rating. Customizable hotkeys will be in the next version.
m: I have contacted the support team in an effort to figure out what might be causing the crash. It seems that other widget developers are experiencing the same problem, so it seems to be a bug in the Widget Engine or the iTunes COM. I have noted your input about the scrolling and will see if I can do something about that. The Keyboard shortcut problems are now fixed and will be included in the 1.2 version. A display for track and length information + iTunes controls is under development.

(see below)...artwork that I had added manually. Not really sure why some artwork was lost and not others, must be to do with how the iTunes Companion stores them. So yay, congratulations on a great widget, and apologies. Three complaints though: The "CTL T" command has disabled New Tab in Firefox, its still scroll a little fast, and this widget is so good and I want to use it so much that I am now going to manually add all the artwork to my 4596 tracks in my library. Okay, so regarding my earlier comment, here's the update. I've been fiddling around trying to work out what happened, and found out it had nothing to do with this widget (yay). Here's the long version if anyone is interested, bored or may have the same problem. I got most of my album covers using the iTunes Companion widget , and only manually added any album covers that the widget couldn't find. Unknown to me at the time, this widget sets the id3 tag of the mp3 to version 2.1. When I play my mp3s out of the house I use a smartphone with a program called OggPlayer, which only reads id3 tags properly if they are version 1.1. For a while I couldn't work out why albums that I had already converted to 1.1 kept changing back to 2.1, and probably a day before the new version of iTunes Album Browser was released I did a bulk convert of my library for luck. Apparantly this removed the artwork of any albums that had been sourced from the iTunes Companion widget, but not ar

Great widget. I have an issue with the new hotkeys in version 1.1, though. I can no longer open new tabs in Firefox with Ctrl-T when this widget is open because it's usurped it. Can you make the hotkeys optional and/or customizable? Thanks.

man, this is such a great idea. i'm really looking forward to future versions.
my troubles: -crashes fairly regularly when i doubleclick to play a new album. i have to restart the widgit. (i use random order + autoscroll, if that helps). -scrolling. it's sort of hard to navigate between albums with the automatic side-of-the-window scroll. i can't get it to start and stop properly, so i end up having to use the arrow buttons anyway. it also scrolls a lot when i don't want it to (i.e., i'm just trying to get to a menu or something) -firefox keyboard shortcuts (i know you're fixing this one)
there's the possibility of replacing the itunes window altogether here! i still need it now for track information/length + the skip track buttons.

repeated experiments tell the same story. the widget will only hold 361 albums without issue.
after a re-index brings back 2000+ albums (45min), at some point shutting down and re-starting resets count to first 361 (A-C) only.

JuryDuty: You will get the "Play Album: No Tracks added" message for one of the following reasons:
1) The album title or artist name the widget operates with for an album has been changed in iTunes.
2) Settings in the Playlist preference group exclude tracks added to the playlist. Check your setting on the a) Playlist filter and b) Only add checked tracks fields against the track rating and checked for playback for all tracks in the album where you get the message.
3) Your settings to include or exclude compilation albums will also work for tracks added to the playlist. If you have selected to exclude compilation albums, no tracks checked with part of a compilation are added to the playlist.

happy to help. let me know what email address to use.
bugs are a hidden blessing in the end. going through such a large collection as my own makes me realise I do not want every 2 bit album in the album browser. so using import all would in truth make a mess I would spend months cleaning up.
I plan to slowly add albums then turn auto import off.

1st let me say...best widget idea ever. now after waiting so long, auditing my entire collection to be ready for the new version (the entire month) I waited through the 45 min re-index.I so wanted to say YES YES YES...
instead its NO NO NO
after the re-index I could see 2,230 albums but all the controls did not work. no next, back sort etc worked. no scroll or any other control.
shut down widget and re-start. it came back with no albums at all!!!
as I play iTunes it imports the album ok and I have tested, with shut down and re-start and it keeps this info so and this point I'm hitting next next next in iTunes as the import method.
will see if I feel keen enough to try a re-index latter. will report results back.
stil best idea ever, ver 1.0 no bugs but slow. ver 1.1 dang bugs!

tsunami99: I have no idea what could have happened. Since the artwork is no longer in iTunes my first thought was that another program/widget had made changes to your library. You might recover some of the missing artwork from the Covers folder (saved there from the 1.0 version). Use the "Locate Artwork Folder on Disk" option to view the artwork. From there you can add them to your iTunes library again. I have also read somewhere that the artwork could be in the MP3 files, but the iTunes library hasn’t been updated to reflect that there is an artwork in the file. This could happen if another program has been used to update the artwork. Send me an e-mail if you can’t find a solution.
Justin Miao: Thanks Justin. I'm planning something that will have this feature, but it might take some time. So in the meantime I might add an option to keep the Now Playing window open all the time (in the next version).

kgprodigy: This widget never touches the iTunes Music Library file directly. All interactions with iTunes are done through the COM interface. For the most part this widget only reads data from iTunes. The only actions I can think of that can alter the iTunes Music Library file are when the widget’s playlist are created/renamed or when tracks are added to/deleted from that playlist. Unless you experienced an error of some sort on any of those actions I find it difficult to believe that this widget caused the problem. But of course something unexpected could have happened on your system that caused the iTunes Music Library file to be corrupted. After googling your error message my impression is that the error is mostly caused by hardware errors or low disk space.

Hi, a really useful application. I too miss browsing through my CD collection and the feel of the widget is great.
I would, however, like to add my voice to those below for an improved way of handling compilation albums. Compilations take my 300CD collection to over 900 entries in the Album Browser - simply too much and too messy to be useful.
Keep up the good work! Michael

Thomas: Thanks for the response. Of course, now the issue has chnaged slightly. the wodget can no longer start itunes. Actually, let me clarify. Once the widget starts, there is a process running called itunes.exe, but it never shows up as a running application and no itunes windows ever appear. if I clsoe the widget, the itunes.exe is removed from the processes list. I can still open itunes fine via a normal shorcut. I deleted the widget data file, manually opened itunes and started the widget. The debug window shows "_error indexing itunes music library" (see screen shot) http://home.sc.rr.com/szurlo/graphics/widget.jpg
Thanks, Steve

SteveZ: I'm puzzled by the problem you are experiencing. Especially since you mentioned that the widget launches iTunes with no problem. If iTunes is running and the widget is connected the "Reindex Itunes Music Library" option should be enabled. As long as a track has a value in the Artist/Album fields and it’s not a podcast, the track should be indexed. I don't believe this is the problem on your system, so I can only recommend that you index your library again. You can force the widget to reindex your library by deleting the widget data file and restarting the widget. The file (library.xml) is located one folder up from the Covers folder (use the "Locate Artwork Folder on Disk" option to go to the folder). If it's still not working you have to open up the widget in debug mode and see if there are any error messages that can guide me in the right direction. See the previous post for instructions to open up the Widget Engine in debug mode.

Missacula: I am guessing that the problem is related to the Japanese character set and filenames. I think the problem is either that an error is occurring when an artwork image is saved to disk (during indexing) or when the file path is read from the widget data file.
Could you use the "Locate Artwork Folder on Disk" option to go to the artwork folder and see if there are any images in that folder? And could you open up the widget in debug mode and see if there are any error messages that can guide me in the right direction?
To set Yahoo! Widget Engine in debug mode: 1) Close the widget. 2) Hold Ctrl+Shift and click the Yahoo! Widget Engine icon in the taskbar. 3) Select the Debug Mode option. 4) Open up the widget.

Peter: Thank you for the rating! The next release handles compilation albums.
tsunami99: Keep the requests coming! I'm planning on adding iTunes controls to the main widget window. I haven't thought about adding iTunes controls to the popup. I use the iTunes toolbar to do what you described. It's located on the taskbar and gives you access to the iTunes controls without maximizing iTunes. Right click the Taskbar. Select Toolbars > iTunes. Then minimize iTunes.
Dave: Thanks! I will look into the scroller and animation request. The rest is already finished or on the agenda.

CamonZ: No, I haven't thought about it.
darkangel: Limit albums by x number of tracks would only improve the read time and not the indexing time. But I can see that for the collectors with a lot of albums the option to cut down on albums is a nice feature. The feature is already on my todo list (along with limit albums by playtime), but it's listed with a low priority. If it's a wanted feature I can boost it up.
lommers: Thanks! I do believe Apple would have made this much better than me :)

Not sure what the deal is but I only get one tile with no album art, and when I right click the widget "Reindex Itunes Music Library" is dimmed out (disabled). It's like it thinks I don't have Itunes, or there are no songs in the library, however, the widget launches Itunes fine and Itunes itself works fine and shows my 2000+ songs....

Compilations should just be shown as one album, and not every artist by himself who is on a compilation.

One more request Thomas, just to give you more work. Dave listed pretty much everything this widget wants, but one thing that would be great would be iTunes controls on the popup. I often play my whole library or select playlists through Party Shuffle, and being able to go "meh, skip" to certain tracks without having to maximise iTunes would be ace. Lovin having this widget

The idea of this program is brilliant. Congratulations for a good execution. May I suggest a few things (some have already been said) which would make it even better:
If compilations would be listed as such If albums with only a few tracks could be excluded If the scroller could be moved more sensitively - I have too many albums to move easily If the albums had an animation as you scrolled, like on OSX dock If the albums could be ordered randomly
Thanks for a good widget. I look forward to updates!

Thank you for answering. I checked everything you noticed but still I do not see any artworks. an artwork is only displayed on the popup window when I played an album for the first time. Because my windows is Japanese Edition, the widget is not suitable.

another trick would be to limit 'albums' to ones with 'x' number of tracks. this way the total number of albums and hence load times can be tuned for each user.
looking forward to ver 1.1

Missacula: You will see the default "no artwork" image if one of the following conditions are true: 1) The format of the artwork is returned as "Unknown artwork format" from iTunes. The formats supported by the COM interface are: jpg, png and bmp. 2) The image path to the album artwork saved in the widget data file does not exist. This could happen if you renamed or moved the folder where all the artwork is saved after indexing. 3) An error occurred when the artwork was saved to your disk. 4) There are no artwork saved in the fist track the widget finds in an album (the widget only check the first track for artwork to save processing time).
Check the folder containing the artwork and see if there are any images there. If you are using the latest version of iTunes and added the artwork in one of the supported formats everything should work fine. But there might be some special circumstances that I don't know about that are causing the problem on your syst

politicalslug: Thanks for your honesty. I do agree, for the collectors out there this may not be the widget for you. But I think your suggested 100 album limit is to low. I personally have 300+ albums and it's working just fine (otherwise I wouldn't have published it). I believe the recommended album limit should be close to 500-600 albums (for this version). With the improved read time and hopefully a fix to the "part of a compilation" problem in the next release I hope this can even be higher.
The initial indexing and reindexing does take some time depending on the size of your library. This is because every track has to be indexed to get the album track count and rating.

Sorry to have to be the one to say it, but this widget is crap for anyone with a large library. This would probably work well if I only had ~100 albums. Considering I have closer to 3500 albums this is simply the most inefficient iTunes widget I've ever used.
I suggest that people interested in this widget check out the iTunes Companion or the iPod Video widgets. Those perform better and are tailored to large libraries.
Sorry for the honesty. Keep up the good work and maybe one day this will become an alternative to those I've listed above for use with large libraries.

darkangel: I do hope you mean 4 to 5 minutes and not 45 minutes… I didn't realize the amount of time it took to read 1500+ albums from the data file (I only tested on 300+ albums). Because of your feedback I did some code optimizing and speed testing last night and managed to speed up the read time considerably. So the next release will be a lot faster reading your data file at startup. Thanks for the heads up!
tsunami99: The random feature is implemented and will be in the next release. I got inspired by your request and even added a "show random album" option (with hotkey) in your honor.

perhaps in lue of "part of a compilation" (at least in the sort term) the list could be 'indexed' on album name only?
PS closing widget and re-opening took the same time as a re-index, about 45mins on my system. Is this normal for 18k worth?

best widget concept 'ever' (major congrats and well done)but without "part of a compilation" working, its just a nightmare for my collection. a 'right click' check box for "part of a compilation" would also be ideal (I do not look foward to updating 18,000 songs).
still awsome work so far and will watch this space with extreme interest.
PS the random idea is brillant as well.

Thanks for all your comments!
tsunami99: Good idea. I'll see what I can do about the random feature.
Graham: I don't think this is possible because of the strain on the CPU it would require. But I can add the option to choose different default images to show on the albums that don't have any artwork.
Brendan: This feature is planned for a future release (not the next release). For now you can use another widget (like iTunes Companion), freeware programs or web sites to download your album artwork. There are some really good options out there.
Dan: Thanks :) I agree... CoverFlow rocks! What more can I say.
Dave: Thanks!
David: Is there any particular function you want integrated? I am working on the option to delete artwork from an album in iTunes (from all tracks in the album) based on your feedback. Hopefully it will make it into the next release.

Nice widget. The only one I've bothered downloading in months. Aside from fixing the compilations as said earlier, a nice feature would be a "random" organisation. Would make flicking through your music collection more enjoyable than having everything always organised. Also a smoother scrolling function would be nice. Looking forward to updates, keep up the good work.

I think this has real potential and you've done some really good work so far, might I suggest that in cases where there is no artwork available instead of simply having "no artwork available" sign perhaps have it replaced by a black artwork with the artist name and album - that would make make it much easier to differntiate between songs.

I think this could be very useful if it had a button that would go out and find the artwork and lock it to that particular album. I only have a few albums that have artwork.

Thomas: really great. I already use iTunes Companion and Sing that iTunes and I wonder if any of their functions can be integrated? As to your widget, it may help me solve a problem I have with iTunes. For an unknown reason, some of my artwork is corrupted. The same 5 or 6 covers are misplaced into many albums where they don't belong. The error becomes even more obvious with your widget since I see those same covers repeating frequently. The corruption must have been a one time event because I can change the art manually. I was hoping your widget would allow me to do that more easily. When I find a corrupted cover in your widget, I can click on it and the song plays, but then its a few steps to get to the actual song then to get to the artwork dialog box to delete. Sometimes I can delete from iTunes Companion with the "dismiss artwork" feature, but I was hoping to get something similar in this widget. I hope the solution to this problem is not unique to me.

rick: This widget is inspired by the functionality to browse albums in iTunes from the beautiful CoverFlow application. Credit to Jonathan del Strother is mentioned in the "about" document included in the download.
Wootness: I'll try to include "part of a compilation" in the next release. It's on my to-do list.
Martin Cannings: A Mac version is not on the agenda yet. I am considering a Mac purchase in the future so it's not impossible. But don't get your hopes up.

I like it but I'd like it to filter out songs that are "Part of a compilations" because I have lots of soundtracks with various artists, and it would display ALL of the individual tracks and call it an album.
