Nice one, if it could be possible for you to improve somme little things: 1) The possibility to swich off the "Ding" 2) The possibility to ping as small as each second (1 minute is too long for me) 3) The possibility to auto-hide the empty servers, and to keep for example only 3 or 4 leds 4) The possibility to through away the "Check" indication in front of each name server 5) To auto-adjust the of the widget depending of the longest name 6) A "tiny" button to reduce the widget to a very small led bar only, without text 7) (stop me !!!) 8) There is only Red/Green leds. Could it be possible to have orange led, and the ability to add level detection (example: <10 ms: green, beetween 10 and 100 ms: orange, > 100 ms: red)... 9) instead of test message, why not email... Simplier for me...
Stop for today, hope you can do something. Nice job !
Franck

Nice widget. I added my Router, modem, desktop and two TiVo units - all work great. My laptop is connected directly to the router, but it is not recognized by the "ping". Is this a firewall problem? Any thoughts? P.S. Could a future release use the Windows defined date format method, instead of defaulting to DD/MM/YYYY. Here in the chilly midwest, it's MM/DD/YYYY. Thanks for a great widget.

Hi Phil, I face the same problem that Ian mentions below. In spite of configuring the widget rightly, and purchasing enough credits from clickatell, I still fail in getting the widget to send me SMS. The widget fails to save my preferences. That is, whenever I go back to the preferences, the particular server that I wanted the text messages activated goes back to a "No". Please help! Thanks in advance.

The best way to avoid dings in empty spots is to put in 127.0.0.1 as the ip address in each spot. That will solve the problem entirely.

Do you think you could add color schemes to the next version? Or a way to change the font color.

Hey Phil, I love the Monitor! I have to agree with Matt. The dings can be really anoying if you have no servers listed. Good work, keep it up! :)

If you do not have a server in every spot (say you only have 4 servers) it dings for each of the empty spots. May want to look at fixing because this can be rather annoying.
I like the ability of being able to watch all of the servers in one spot. Many of the other monitors only allow you do one.

Thanks nip, problem is resolved in latest version just uploaded. I've also added a simple sound alert.

Hey, Phil! This is a great Widget, but I found one flaw! If the machine's IP is 10.0.0.1 to 10.0.0.9 (which are absolutely correct internal network IP addresses) the Widget shows red light even if the machine is up and running. Reason: the result string from the ping command in these cases is 280 symbols of length and the check // if strlength > 280 ...// fails even if the machine is ok, Regards!

Hi Ian, to use text messages, try:
Enter your mobile number without the zero in front (so 0956 456566 becomes 956456466) (not strictly necessary as the program will strip off a leading zero anyway) Make sure the country code is entered as eg 44 Make sure text messages are activated on the text messages page Set how many times a service will fail before a text message is generated (and the frequency between checks on the General page) Make sure text messages are activated for the Server etc you are interested in.
Hope this helps

Thanks for the feedback. Bellyman: I'm more likely to add a sound interface on the next version, so that an alert fires a sound through the sound card. Your wife could be trained to respond to that. J: Nothing special is needed, although it is in the new flat widget format, so unzip won't work. Rob: You should be able to ping any server that can normally be pinged from your command prompt.

Nice app. Though I may dive into SMS messaging to my Nokia, I would actually like to see some windows popup message when a server is down - instead of merely a red light. I have a PC in the home and need it for outside access. I can't see my wife always checking for the red light - but if a popup came up - she could be trained to look at the monitor then proceed to resolve it. Thanks

I am using a Windows machine and I cant seem to start the widget OR rename it and open it with winzip. Other widgets work fine and are openable with winzip. Do I need something special to open this widget besides the Yahoo Widget engine? Thanks, -J.

New version V1.1 has several features to address the comments below. Phillydog, it is a basic ping service from the box it is running on, it measures the length of the response to check if it is valid, and I have reduced this a little which may help. Miro, I have now added space for 9 servers, but my intention was to create this as an exercide to see whether it could be done. The programming isn't that difficult, so extra servers can be added on. Mark. V1.1 splits the servers into groups so the menu doesn't overrun the screen.

Does this use ping technology and if so, does it ping from the box that your widget is running, or does it connect to an outside server and do the ping from there? I have tried pinging boxes within the firewall at my company, my box at home, and yahoo... all seem to give a red light.... :( I must be doing something wrong.

I agree with Craig's need for more than 6 servers... I need at least 10 to check periodically... It would be fine if you could add as much servers as needed with some kind of "+"-Button...

Is it possible to have more than six servers? The description says any of the features can be expanded. Just wasn't sure how that's done. Great widget.

Sorry Mark, absolutely correct, I run my screen at 1280 x 1024. Version 1.1 will have the Servers split across two or three pages. Elik - I'm not sure about that, I'll look into how easy it is to put in. I tend to rely on the text message notification as I don't have speakers on my work PC.

I like it, I agree with the previous poster, it is annoying that the settings menu is too big for lower res settings. Mostly what I would like is an alternative form of notification, like triggering an audio file.

You must have a very high screen res because it is impossible to save settings at 1024x768.
