Slide Rule
Greg Schechter

This is the first slide rule Widget ever created. It contains four different types of slide rules and a tutorial for each. It also contains a history of slide rules. The Widget contains a plethora of features, some never seen before in this type of application. All this, while still looking slick and fashionable.

5) Also, in agreement with a previous user, I find that the circular rule is almost unusable because it is so unstable in its motion. Fixing this would make it much easier.

Other than these small problems, this is a fantastic widget. Thank you for your hard work!

This is a fantastic widget that has gotten me very interested in slide rules. I am really enjoying using it, but I have a few complaints:

1) The rule is very small, and this limits its accuracy. If it could be scaled up so that finer mouse motions could put the cursor or the slide exactly where I wanted it, I would like it a lot better. This would also make it much easier to use without having to squint at the screen.

2) Using the edit pane does not actually seem to shift the values on the slide rule. If I could do that, this would make the tool a lot easier to use and would somewhat negate the need for making the size variable.

3) I agree with the previous users who have commented that it would help to be able to choose your rule without having to cycle through several.

4) The circular slide rule instructions are very vague and don't really give a good idea of how to use it. I had to look online for a better set of instructions.

5) Also, in

The rotational movement of the circular scales and the rotary cursor arm is so unstable on the Macintosh that that scale is not usable. It is better to control the rotation simply by horizontal movement of the mouse pointer. Contact me by private message if you would like code samples that work.

Greg,
Please contact my via member name in the forum as I would like to work on a slightly different version of the slide rule. Would like permission.

This is pretty cool! I've used a slide rule since the 6th grade and as a technician. Calculators killed the SR but it's still fun to "remember" the old ways.

This is an interesting and major piece of work, and is very well done. I have a couple of minor niggles. It would be better if the "Change Rule" button had a popup menu, so that you could go directly to a particular rule. In the "Advantages Of Slide Rule Part 2" pane, the multiplication sign is displaying as a lozenge, probably due to the encoding of js files not being in accord with the encoding declared in the xml file.
